A man arrested on Wednesday for allegedly trying to use a stolen credit card at a drugstore got a break from a judge after passing a sort of Bible quiz.
When Eric Hine appeared in court this morning, his attorney described him as a church-goer, hoping the judge would set a low bond.
Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge John Burlew was skeptical and asked Hine to recite the 23rd Psalm.
He did: all six verses. Some in the courtroom applauded.

The stupidity of this reminds me of the Sideshow Bob trial in the Simpsons:
"No, this doesn't say 'Die Bart Die'. It's German for 'The Bart The'."
"Ooh, no one who speaks German could possibly be evil!"
So... the thief told what could be a lie, the judge tested the thief on the possible lie, and it ended up being the truth.
It's silly, but it's not fundie.
It doesn't say anything about a verdict. He hasn't been tried yet.
Now, it's stupid, yes, but it's just bail. The judge can do pretty much whatever he wants for that, can't he?
It's inappropriate to let someone out just because they can recite Bible verses, let alone the concept that regular church-goer = good person, but I have some sympathy for the judge. It sounds like he tried to challenge him and failed, and might've then felt he had to allow bail (which is common enough for that sort of offence).
ryan,
He didn't hit him with $10,000 bond, he gave him a $10,000 dollar appearance bond, which means he only has to pay it if he misses his next hearing.
Hang on, the dude could just be an argumentative atheist with a good memory.
Most of the regulars here know christian scripture better than yer average christian anyway...how easy would it be to bullshit your way out of court like that?
Besides if he was a true fundie he would have quoted a really obscure and totally irrelevant bit and starting preaching about the evils of adultery and lego
Wow, I can recite the 100th psalm, too. Do I get a "Get Out of Jail Free" card? Actually, Judge Burlew comes across as a fairly compassionate guy, who also made the news for releasing a woman early to care for her sick child, so this doesn't seem too fundie.
Turtlensue: Judge Burlew is an African American. Also, see above.
This seems like the judge was just trying to assert that the thief wasn't lying. Personally, I think it's odd, but not fundie.
Now, if that had any effect on the verdict, then I'd say that the judge should be removed from the bench.
Don't these people usually say that church-going people are more moral than us others? Shouldn't the "fall from grace" be much harder for them?
It's the action and the intent that shall determine the penalty, not how pious the criminal is.
As I can recite almost all of the Gospel of St Luke, can I go out and steal a nice handbag?
Oh wait, I can't! As I have internal moral, I would never be able to appreciate that handbag, I'd feel sick every time I used it.
Confused?
