Days away from her seventh birthday, a little girl named Emma Rose is currently trapped in Georgia’s foster care system, unable to reunite with the woman who has been her mother for almost a year — all because the mother is a lesbian.
The prospective adoptive mother, Elizabeth Hadaway, was also sentenced to 10 days in jail earlier this month by a Wilkinson County Superior Court judge who refused to grant the adoption in part because “the child will have a long-term exposure to the homosexual parent’s lifestyle.”

You guys gotta read the article in full, it's absolute crap (the Judge's point of view)
To top it all off, he doesn't want the child to be brought up in a homosexual lifestyle, then why, at first, did he send the child back to her biological mother, who is also a lesbian?
Gah...stupid stupid people
Ugh. I read the full article; two other judges seem to agree that the child is better off with the lesbian parent than left in the foster system.
Parrott is just exercising discrimination, which is an abuse of his power.
It's people like him that give Southerners the "ignorant hillbilly" stereotype.
I don't think fundies even realize how many lives they're destroying. Don't they think that maybe they should once, just once in the gay marriage/adoption debate, consider the feelings of the people this actually affects? You know, gay people? And children of them?
But no. They're more interested in the opinions of "normal" people who happen to promote one-dimensional stereotypes.
That judge's "morals" are shoved too far up his arse.
It never ceases to amaze me that as a gay man living in the 21st century United States I still face this kind of ingrained bigotry, driven by pure fear, on a pretty regular basis. And it's not like my partner and I are "in your face" about it, we're just living our lives honestly and that terrifies a lot of people. I feel very sorry for this woman and her little girl because I can certainly empathize.
Thank Jeebus I didn't come out of the closet during the Ronny "Let-Them-All-Die-Of-AIDS-Through-Inaction" Reagan years.
Gah!
Why don't you look at some fucking studies, asshole? Kids raised by homosexual parents don't end up any worse or better off than kids raised by straight parents. And why the fuck did you send that poor woman to jail?
Well... now I've read the article. That man is on one of the biggest power trips I've seen, and is doing absolutely everything he can to prevent that woman from adopting the child. Fucking sick.
Why, is it illegal to be homosexual in Georgia? No? Then this judge is way out of line.
Of course, the post says "in part." If the other part is because Hadaway is a child molester, then the judge may have a point. But if that's the case s/he shouldn't have brought up homosexuality in the first place.
This is just... I'm so saddend and angry at the same time.
This is just proof that the homophobes don't give a shit about children's wellbeing, they just don't want "teh evil gayz!!!" to have any rights. Yeah, gret idea, leave an innocent child in foster care instead of a loving home so YOU can feel big.
I seriously don't know what else to say other than the fact that this is seriously disgusting, and wrong. I'm just... it's so horrible.
I've never met the person that is the judge in this case.
But after reading through the story, it seems he is both a bit of a prick and, sadly, completely brainwashed into believing that no homosexual could ever be a good parent ever .
And judge? There have been studies done. One just came out recently in fact, saying that there are virutally no differences between chldren raised by heterosexual and cheldren reaised by homosexuals. In fact, it was thought that children raised by homosexuals did slightly better because of their high levels of tolerance for others.
To be fair, though, I don't know if the details of the study included people living in rural areas as the judge said the studies should be.
The judge...
Homosexuality =/= evilness.
Bigotry, discrimination, xenophobia, however, ======= evil.
Oh noez! It's JUDICIAL ACTIVISM! I'm sure the conservatives will be out very soon picketing with signs and shouting slogans.
Oh wait, fundies don't care about "judicial activism," they only care about screwing over gay people. If there's "judicial activism" that works in their favor, it gets a blind eye.
Oh yeah, I'm sure long-term exposure to the foster care system will be much better for her than letting her have a loving parent. Soooooo much better. Oh man, and maybe, just maybe when she ages out of the system she can fall into the deep poverty and homelessness that a lot of other "aged-out" foster children fall into because she has no support system and only a little education to fall back on.
Compassionate Conservatism in a nutshell.

I'm trying to figure out what the ten days in jail was for. The article's quite vague on that.
From the article:
"Parrott’s ruling ordered Emma Rose to be returned to Deborah Schultz within 10 days, or be declared a “deprived child” and turned over the Georgia Department of Family & Children Services. Hadaway and Shultz met at a truck stop in Jeffersonville, Ga., on Jan. 12, 2007, but Shultz refused to take Emma Rose back to Florida with her, instead reiterating her wish for Hadaway to raise the young girl.
[ ... ]
Upon discovering that Emma Rose remained in Hadaway’s custody, Parrott issued two more rulings: a Feb. 12 order to place Emma Rose in DFCS custody, and a March 23 ruling finding Hadaway and her attorney in criminal contempt for not following his order to transfer custody of the child. The two women were sentenced to 10 days in jail, or five days plus a $500 fine, but are currently appealing Parrott’s decision."
Confused?
