(part of a discussion on torture and PTSD)

wirehead-wannabe: When I read about the outcomes of life after being tortured, the author always emphasizes that full recovery is impossible, and that flashbacks *will* happen for the rest of the person’s life. And that these flashbacks can even be triggered by adrenaline from what would normally be pleasant events like weddings. And that they lose sleep, become depressed. And that they have chronic pains and disabilities for the rest of their lives. And that they have to watch the perpetrators probably never face justice. And that they can never be certain that they won’t be recaptured. And that they’ll have to live knowing that it’s still happening and will continue to happen to others.

And like... how can you admit all this and *not* conclude that the rational thing to do immediately upon escaping or being released is to blow your brains out, assuming there’s nothing absolutely critical that you need to get done to help someone else first? Does that sound worth living, even in the alleged best scenario?

isaacsapphire: This eagerness to give up, this extreme aversion to pain, and the gall to think they know how to run the lives of people they neither are familiar with nor respect is a big part of why utilitarians end up sounding like cartoon villains so much.

russian-hackers-official: #utilitarianism #this is why I strongly distrust utilitarians #other people’s lives are not worth living
