Well, yes, I’ve had some bad interns at my office too, but also a few really amazing ones. Judging by the OP’s writing, I’m guessing the women he’s complaining about are more or less his immediate peers and a reflection of his own lifestyle.
This very summer I had the delightful pleasure of giving some guidance to a 19yo woman who was spending her summer vacation from college, outside of her own country, with only rudimentary knowledge of the local language, working in a genetics laboratory as an assistant, although she was an English and French major, to get experience in diving into a totally foreign environment. My work with her showed that she was an extremely intelligent young lady, sharp as a whip, and hard working. The summer was a smashing success for her. I can only assume (as she also said herself) that at the same time her fellow students back in the US were all at the beach, doing more or less what the OP described above. The only thing in that list she did was to charge her phone. But I do that too.
