So, all the black people I've worked with - worked for, even - are actually all unemployed welfare recipients? Wow. I'd never have guessed.
What in blazes do you do for a living that you readily imply that you have somehow never even seen a non-white employee of any business?
Have you been to a Welfare or EI line? There's just as many white people collecting benefits as anyone else and I'd sure like to know just what 'freebies' you think black people get in a country where they're arrested ten minutes after buying something at a high end retailer on suspicion of having stolen the money they paid with?
Actually no, don't tell me. Because if you can't see black people on the job or white people on unemployment how the hell can you expect me to believe whatever absurdity leaves your mouth happened in the real world you so routinely ignore?

Slave trading was well established in Africa well before the Portuguese arrived. It was the various African states and kingdoms (not "chieftains" as the OP implies) that brought slavery as an economic model to the attention of Europeans. Many West African empires flourished from the record profits they made off of the trade. In fact, abolitionist movements severely weakened them, possibly enough to make their land ripe for outright European conquest in the nineteenth century.
You'd are correct that this is not to reduce or ignore European culpability in the slave trade. It is, however, a myth that it was good only for one side.
@ HEIL SATAN & Sangfroid: Actually, Rock just might have a point, as depressing as that is. Multiple studies have shown a strong positive link between cultural homogeneity and social trust, with the most homogenous neighborhoods reporting around twice as much trust in their neighbors as the most heterogenous. Obviously, achieving this through forced segregation would be, ethically speaking, horrifying, but self-segregation does often happen without any outside interference, for better or worse. Besides, the United States has actually reported a very high willingness to live next to persons of a different race, so perhaps the old paradigms can change yet...

Actually, I do know about the studies you are referring to. I am not a scientist (yet) so going against hypothesis backed by several studies is pretty cocky of me, but to me, it seemed to be more about trusting people you consider to be one of ´´you´´. The only problem is that this whole ´´us and them´´ mentality with all it causes is created before we even start talking. To put simply what I am saying (as I am not a native english speaker, this could just get needlesly complicated and awkwardly written if I went the long way) it was found out (by several studies) that children simply remember only characteristics of their parents and maybe a few closest people. Therefore, if their closest enviromnent is mono-ethnic (chances of which are logically higher in more homogeinous societies) then they simply can´t even imagine that people might look different. To finally get to what I mean, in more homogeinous societies people simply spend most time surrounded by people they actually consider to be ´´people´´ with some oddballs they probably just see as curiosities and quikly forget about. In more heterogenous societies however, people spend their earliest childhood (time when this whole classification starts) with people who are very probably of the same race, or even ethnicity (as you yourself said, self-segregation happens a lot) and then are thrown into enviromnent with considerable presence of people whom they don´t even consider to be ´´people´´. And that is when it starts getting serious, if you get what I mean. So while ethnic/racial segregation WOULD improve a lot of things, the thing that would REALLY help would be if self-segregation stopped and children were in heterogenous enviromnent from as early as possible. And just to make you all optimistic, this actually works, United States being an example as you yourself (unknowingly) wrote.
Of course! Yet, on the other hand, according to a number of sources, approximately 61% of people on welfare and approximately 88.7% people on social security are white according to the 1990 census. 2012 statistics actually show there are more Caucasians on welfare than there are African Americans.
So Candygirl7, you better start worrying if all those people of color grow tired of working to make sure social security's liquidity remain solid, otherwise your elder years are going to be very tough.
