Also, atheism is a BYPRODUCT of communism, not the otherway around. Communism dictates that all people must be equal. Religios institutions get special priveleges. Therefore, religious institutions must be done away with.
It fails, because he killed many atheists too and many theists survived during his regime(in fact, in a bad taste joke, the communist party has asked the Patriarcate of Moscow to make him saint. No joke guys). It's obvious that his criteria was different.

The Russian Orthodox Church -- which had been an arm of the peasant-suppressing Tzarist government for centuries -- was in the way of an uncontested communist takeover. It had to go. The victims of the regime were killed because they were considered enemies of that regime, not because of Stalin had the hots for atheism.
Stalin killed many innocents, but he NEVER made a reference that sounded anything like "I will silence all who believe in God. God-believers are the scum of the earth." Infact, no man in HISTORY has ever said anything like that. Christian propaganda might state otherwise.

Do yourself a favour and check out Stalins biography. He was raised and educated within a strict, restrictive religious (Christian) system and saw abuses of power and moral deviance.
