[The whole article is full of fatal levels of stupid]
By now, the oft-recurring negative portrayals of Christianity in major Hollywood movies have become hackneyed and predictable. The recent rendition of Beowulf only reinforced this trend. The same subtle depictions and motifs present in movies from decades past were once again present, a favorite being the attempt to try to depict pagans as “open-minded” and “free-spirited” peoples, or, quite anachronistically, as medieval counterparts to the modern, secular, liberal. The idea being that pagan peoples — unencumbered by the suffocating forces of Christianity — were/are happy, passionate folk, able to live life to the fullest.

Yeah, it seems that fundie Christians are usually the ones with their panties in a bunch over nothing.
This may be a little off-topic, and if so, I apologise - but why don't they ever complain about Pirates of the Caribbean ? That trilogy has evil men being brought back from the dead, voodoo, prostitution, violence, zombies, avarice, pride, sloth, greed, anger, lust, and gluttony...
Or am I missing something very basic and simplistic here?
Edit - I should perhaps add that personally I love the trilogy, even though it's disney.
You did not even see the movie I see. If you notice by the time Beowulf is king his whole kingdom is Christian. And if Hollywood is so against Christianity then why did they make
The Passion of the Christ
The Nativity Story
Evan Almighty
The Ten Commandments
@Joules: They probably do, we just never hear about it for some reason. But then you've got Mr. Gibbs always saying God stuff and Ragetti trying to read the Bible.
I don't know. But I love those movies too. I would so bang Jack Sparrow. XD Everyone loves pirates. ARRR!!
You have to admit, some of those pagan gods and goddesses know how to party.
What's the matter? You don't envy those open-minded, free-spirited people now, do you?

And this would be wrong because
?
I quite like that bit at the end, where he claims that the only historical records on the pagan stories were those of Christian historians. You know, in spite of the fact that Pope Theophilus ordered all material that even mentioned pagan practises burned, and their legacy forgotten - and so precipitated the Dark Ages and regressed human development by 1000 years.
Oh, and he harps on about Christians 'saving Western civilisation', all the while forgetting that, without the efforts of the pagan Hellenes in the Persian War, Christianity would never have existed. And fails to mention that, while Constantine took up the cross willingly, much of the rest of his empire was forced at swordpoint. An excellent history revision!
Uh, the movie might be new, but the story is a very ancient one....in fact, it was written by 'pagan' Anglo-Saxons, who portrayed the things they knew and life as they knew it. That's why historians use the 'Lay of Beowulf', among other documents, to try to gain clues as to what Anglo-Saxon society was like.
so, it's not so much refute christianity than give people the idea that ATHEISTS ARE COMPLETELY NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS. oh, but we can't have that now, can we? despite proof to the otherwise. and wold christians please stop quoting scripture, the bible is only true if you believe it.
I don't see his problem, here.
They're always telling us that being open-minded, free-spirited or passionate, or living 'this' life to the fullest, is evil. What else would pagans (and remember, modern atheism is identical to paganism, which is just worshipping Satan) do but have all these vile traits?
Surely, therefore, this film is simply supporting their retarded world view.
The moment their religion was officially sanctioned by the Roman Empire, Christians mounted an all-out assault on Paganism, killing its followers, destroying its temples and burning any Pagan literature they could lay their hands on. And yes, Pagans were far more open-minded and free-spirited than were Christians, and a good deal less bloody to boot.
The typical fundie "if you're not with us*, you're against us" attitude.
* or hate the same people we hate ...
What the hell is this supposed to be? It's a pretty feeble attempt at a movie review, a backhand non-starter as a political essay, an utterly miserable failure if is an attack on paganism, and abysmal if it is intended as a defense of Christianity.
Funny, I often get pissed off at the overabundant picture perfect portrayal of christianity in the movies. Get your preaching off my entertainment. It's old, stale, and boring.
the film is probably idealistic about what dark age life was like, but before the Xians put the guilt trip on anyone having fun, there was the possibility of people enjoying themselves from time to time.
Once the Xians arrived even the fun was taken away for the peasants, and it took about 1000 years before the Church started to seriously work against poverty and slavery
Confused?
