Today is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Constitutional Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. In the spirit of this glorious occasion, President Trump has pardoned Susan B. Anthony, who was unjustly fined $100 long ago for attempting to vote when it was still illegal for women and was never pardoned by any other president.

…err, no. Trump can apologise for his own misdeeds against women, not other peoples’. I won’t believe he’s not sexist until I see him genuinely apologise for his “grab them by the pussy” comment. There’s more, so much more, that he needs to repair than that, but that would be the faintest glimmer of a start. ‘Pardoning’ somebody who wanted something perfectly reasonable is a distraction from that, and is a form of fauxpology: a way of being seen to be sensitive to equality issues by the Democrats while at the same time pandering to the Republican crowd by being magnanimous and ‘forgiving’ her.
It’s a worthless gesture. It happened so long ago he couldn’t possibly have influenced it happening or not happening. That means he cannot personally be held responsible for it, and that’s why he’s pardoned it - as a distraction from his own dispicable behaviour.
Are you really that easily distracted from his actual sexist behaviours, Bobby? I thought you once said that you had such a high IQ that even Mensa couldn’t measure it. Surely you have the smarts to see this deceitful behaviour for what it is? Don’t you, Bobby?
There’s no way that doing something feminist-y with almost zero negative possible consequences could be a bad PR stunt.

You somehow managed to confuse his skin colour for his hair colour and vice versa. Also, he is far too thin and his hands far too big.
This is a bit like going “well, the Catholic Church apologized for the Crusades, including the Children’s Crusade, so they obviously must not have any child molestation problems at all!”
Wasn’t one of the big things about Susan B. Anthony that the judge initially wanted to go easy on her because she was a woman but she demanded to be punished the same as a man to make a point about the infantalization of women in American culture? Or am I thinking about someone else?
What was meant to be an empty symbolic gesture that had no thought whatsoever behind it other than being something to point to and say “I did something nice. Where’s my thank you? You got a cookie kids so quit complaining about the beatings and constantly being lied to and THANK ME ALREADY” might have just wound up becoming a very meta insult. Like donating marshmallow peeps to a food bank for diabetics and saying it was part of the fight against childhood malnutrition… before taking steps to abolish not just school lunch programs but the lunch break itself.
And pardoning an advocate of women’s rights in the past does nothing to change the fact today that Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he sees women involving themselves in politics as “cute” when not attacking as being complainers who have no right to voice opinions or represent others who share that opinion in a democracy and should just shut up and let their betters tell them what’s good for them.
And in the middle of a press conference announcing this utterly pointless symbolic “gesture”, Trump decided to go on the offensive against… Michelle Obama.
