'What is Christianity?' said NTEB indifferently. ’It’s a personal relationship with the Creator of Life, the Universe and Everything, not a religion. ‘Religion’ is belief in false gods, that are nothing but figments of someone’s imagination. It was Christianity’s REAL God who created all there is, making Earth the center of the universe.'
Winston made another convulsive movement. This time he did not say anything. NTEB continued as though answering a spoken objection:
'For certain purposes, of course, that is not true. When we argue for 1st Amendment rights for Christians or when we defend tax excemption for churches, we find it convenient to claim that Christianity is a religion and therefore we are entitled to such things. But what of it? Do you suppose it is beyond us to produce a dual system of theology? Christianity can be a religion or more than a religion, according as we need it. Do you suppose it’s beyond our theologians to make that work? Have you forgotten doublethink?'
