In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

Bulgaria established gun control in 1923, from 1942 to 1956 a half million of the Bulgarian intellectuals were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christian s, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up an d exterminated.

Little Gun History Lesson

The Soviet Union had compulsory military service where every adult of military age had access to a gun. That access didn't help one bit.

Before 1911, Armenians weren't allowed access to firearms because they were non-Muslims. The irony is that the "gun control" gave Armenians access to guns they didn't previously have.

Germany established gun control for Jews. No problem if you weren't Jewish.

There were virtually no laws passed in 1923 in Bulgaria that still pertained in 1956. There had been a communist revolution. And I'd like to see your figures on the extermination of intellectuals. I also note that you make no mention of Bulgaria's persecution of Turks, but they are Muslims, so perhaps they don't count.

Again, China had undergone a world war and a communist revolution. The laws of the Republic of China were simply not enforceable in any part of China except Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau which had gun control and where the political dissidents remained safe.

The fact that there was a civil war raging in Guatemala throughout the period, which entailed a complete breakdown of law and order is, of course, neither here nor there. Since 2013, gun laws in Guatemala are such that, if you are found carrying a weapon, you go to jail. Numbers rounded up and exterminated: um, in fact a dramatic fall in the homicide rate.

Uganda's rule of terror relied on the army which was based on northern, Muslim tribes persecuting the tribes of the traditional rulers in the Christian south. You also forget to mention the 80,000 South Asians, but I guess they're not Christians. If you want to fight the army, be my guest.

Cambodia in 1956 was a relatively peaceful East Asian kingdom. By 1975, it had been bombed by the Americans, run bases for the Viet Cong and fallen to the genocidal insurgency of the Khmer Rouge. It's like claiming about people arrested by East Germany and then complaining about laws passed by the Weimar Republic; it's about as mendacious as you can get.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th century because of gun control: impossible to tell, but probably close to zero.

No politician has ever suggested banning private ownership of all guns. Having learned that there can be a need for self-protection when I was stalked by an ex, and due to the fact that we still don't have a right to control our bodies by demanding euthanasia for terminal AND chronic, incurable illnesses when we decide that we've suffered enough, making guns the only way out for a lot of people, I wouldn't support that, either.

But nobody needs a fucking assault rifle or high capacity magazine for self-protection. If you think that you (or even a whole city of private citizens like you) could have kept the Nazis or any other tank and Air Force-wielding government military force at bay with your private stockpile, you're out of your mind.

Why haven't people been rounded up in Canada, Japan, Australia, and the U.K.? They have very strict gun laws in those countries, very little gun violence, and yet no tyranny. What makes you think the U.S. government would start rounding people up and imprisoning them if people didn't own guns? What are those other countries doing right so that they can live without both guns and government tyranny that we're not doing here in the U.S.?

Besides, if the U.S. government really did want to round up American citizens, they'd send in the military. Little good your AR-15 is going to do against a battalion of M16's, M1A1 tanks, and Hellfire missiles fired from drones so far away you can't see or hear them. Not to mention all the intensive combat training our military receives, so they'll know combat tactics much better than a bunch of Bubbas in a homemade bunker.

USA today: In 2012 close to 9,000 died in gun related homicides (1), and many more committed suicide with guns, and all because heavy duty weaponry is readily available to people from a wide range of backgrounds, including the mentally disturbed. Any attempts to bring in controls, no matter how moderate, is nigh on impossible because of the whipped up frenzy caused by gun nuts over fears that they are coming to take them away, and one of the favoured points used is that they can be used against a tyrannical government. Well, sonny, an autocratic elite wouldn't curb any planned measures to silence dissent because of the fear of repercussions from a rabble of disorganised faux patriots.

Armed resistance groups opposed to the Assad regime operate in Syria right now, yet he has not been toppled and still enables the killing of thousands that oppose him. In regions that are beyond his full control the power resides with rebel groups that have shown no respect for human rights or democracy. Libya, Somalia and Ukraine are not shining examples for the need to have such an armed populace, either.

Totally wrong in China. There has been no gun restriction law in China by 1935, whichever regional government that was existing. The so called extermination was two full scale wars, one within and one against America/South Korea.
During the People's Republic's early days, every able bodied working class citizen is registered as a reserve, militia or vigilante member and theroitically has access to a rifle. The situation was like the right wing american's wet dream, but obviously it bit the whole country in the ass during the Cultural Revolution.
The effective ban on private weapons came around 1983. Currently, China is comparable to Britain or Japan concerning gun control: Application for personal guns can be submitted, but almost impossible to be granted. Athletes, private security and people of certain minority ethnic groups are allowed to use guns registered by their employers.

As others have noted the history is all wrong.

Most of this "gun control" took place during or after a civil war where anybody who wanted a gun could easily get one. These victims, some of them anyway, were not defenseless, they just lost and then had the guns pried from their cold dead hands. Most of the Jews, roma, gays etc killed by the Nazis came from outside Germany in countries that fought desperate wars to stop the Nazis.

Also lets consider how the likes of Stalin came to power. Mostly it was after heavily armed ideologues forced their way into power overthrowing the old government in revolutions, civil wars or coups. If better gun control had been in place to keep the fanatics away from guns, maybe they would never have been able to take power.

Nazi Germany was so anti-gun they envisioned all their World War II veterans would be armed once they settled in the land they cleared of Slavs and Jews.

Christians in Uganda? Good thing we have the Lord's Resistance Army fighting for their rights.

Bulgaria? Never had any semblance of democracy, shifting from a Turkish puppet state to a constantly militarised country fighting with its neighbours to an ally of the Nazis to a Stalinist puppet state.

Stalinist terror in the Soviet Union has little to do with gun control but much to do with the paranoia radiating from Stalin downwards.

China in 1935? You mean the ancestor of the modern-day Taiwanese state which you guys like instead of PR China? Since China was a lawless mess in the early 20th century, you could buy a gun on any street corner I bet.

The Mayans in Guatemala were killed on the order of US-backed dictator Efraín Ríos Montt.

Your guns wouldn't do shit to save you from the Nazis, Soviets, Chinese, anyone, they'd just mean you'd die in your home instead of in a prison camp. You need a serious rebellion to do anything, go look at those Armenians for a decent example of an attempt at it (which also failed, because your guns won't save you in the end from being rounded up and shot by a government determined to get rid of you).
