Folks, this entire discussion is about fear. The very real, very deep fear on the left that the reality of human nature won’t fit their preconceived notions and ideology. Science was “good” as long as it could be used as a club to beat believers. Now that science is making the left look like religious fanatics on the subject on human nature, it is “bad”.
Guess what science doesn’t care about your pieties and faith. It only cares about evidence and facts.
That makes it very scary and accounts for the hysterical reaction to [Rod] Dreher’s entirely rational remarks.

What is this guy on about? My guess is one of two things happened;
1) Somebody, using the scientific method, discovered something this guy likes.
or
2) Somebody not using the scientific method made up some bullshit that this guy likes even though the bullshit is being debunked.
Being that this is posted on FSTDT, I'm going to guess option #2 is more accurate.

So close...

And yet so damned far.
What fear? Which preconceived notions and ideologies is it that human nature doesn't fit? Science is still "good", and it's merely used to follow the evidence.
Who the heck is Dreher and why should we be scared or hysterical of his remarks?
*goes to Wikipedia*
Erm, I'm still bewildered as to why we're supposed to be scared by a shillyshally turncoat who bought into the lie that pedophile Catholic priest are really gay Catholic priest, just cause the victims are mostly boys. If there were as many altar girls as there are altar boys, there would be just as many girls molested as boys.
If there's any fear of science, it's the fear of religious fundies who are afraid that the myth they've based their entire life around will be proven false by scientific discovery. Why else fight so hard against established scientific theories like evolution and the Big Bang? 600 years ago they were the ones fighting round earth theory and heliocentrism.

"What is this guy on about?"
I think the fundies - cornered like this - are trying to redefine (certainly reduced to attempting to claim ) Reality , such is their Cognitive Dissonance re. theirs no longer being the Dominant Paradigm.
I mean, isn't it a case of Department of Redundancy Department, if we - on Planet Reality - who only accept scientific facts , are cared about by the very thing we accept ...?!
...and as for that last line, methinks the Reality-cornered fundies are trying to redefine 'Rationality' itself, as part of their cultic 'Hypnotic Suggestion' as they're trying to preserve their already membrane-thin 'Faith' (in their own little dimension, completely separate from Reality [/Andy Schaftafly]), lest they really lose it.
Whereas we - who this other Andy is trying to turn the doctrinal tables on, using this last resort scare tactic - have already won . Remember, Andy (especially you, Mr. Schaftafly): we have the evidence. We win . >:D
Actually, turd for brains, you are quite, quite wrong.
Many on the left believe in what skeptics is commonly called "woo." You know, stupid shit like naturopathy, ear candeling, astrology, God, massage therapy and so on. And many libertarians believe they are the true defenders of science.
As someone once said, "It isn't a matter of left and right, it is a matter of right and wrong." And science is right, no matter what you believe.
Very first paragraph linked to:
> I’m not quite sure how to talk about this Rod Dreher post because it’s so bizarre. It reads as a whiny appeal for liberals to quit being so mean to creationists and fundies. But if you scratch the surface, you’ll find it’s really a threat. And the threat is basically: “be careful shoving your beloved SCIENCE down our throats, libs, because SCIENCE also says Black people are stupid.” To make his case, he links approvingly to racist shitstain Steve Sailer.
I think I know where this is going.
Yes, very good, sciences does not mold to faith or feelings. It is about evidence and facts, yes, indeed! Science has nothing to do with beating people of faith or propping up progressivism.
...Not that fundamentalists will every actually grasp this, obviously.
Liberals don't fear science. Junk science is detested, sure, but otherwise... What is there to fear? I think Colbert's quote fits nicely here. Reality has a well known liberal bias. Rational people can accept that human nature can lead to both horrendous and beautiful things and that people can be good without god.
"Guess what science doesn’t care about your pieties and faith. It only cares about evidence and facts."
Assuming a comma between "what" and "science" I have to agree. Without the comma, I have to ask "What science is that?"
@ Arctic Knight, aebars
It seems the quote is from a discussion about comments by a blogger named Rob Dreher that liberals should stop laughing at creationists, because black people are stupider then white people. He supports this by citing some pseudoscientist who says shit like:
“Darwin wouldn’t be surprised to learn which race had invented rap music”Steve Sailer
Thankfully since no actual scientists believe that nonsense, so we liberals are free to laugh at creationists, and Andrew Smithers, and Rob, and Steve.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
