I have to address this:
If we applied narcissistic test measures on people today and people 80 years ago, narcissism would rate much higher today.
I don't think so. People don't change that much in 80 years, not even with the advent of new technologies such as the internet.
If there were a rise in narcissism among people living now, that could have any number of causes besides the loss of a nebulous sense of spirituality. People could be complete apathetic bastards 80 years ago, and there are billions more of them who can be complete apathetic bastards now.
Transsexuals existed 80 years ago, but they had to be far more circumspect lest they face persecution. It's only natural in a more accepting time, and one with the capacity to offer sex change operations, that the number of transsexuals who appear in the open would be far higher than previously thought. How that is narcissism is beyond me.
It is narcissistic, however, to believe your personal preferences should take precedence over the happiness of people who are hurting no one with their transformations.
