Another Reason to Homeschool

Fox News has reported that a Maine school will now be issuing birth control pills and patches to middle school kids.

So, whats the problem? There are several problems:

1.) The schools continue to endorse immorality: By passing out any form of contraception, they are saying immorality is fine, here's the tools to accomplish your goal. Of course, we should expect this because there is no knowledge or fear of God in the schools.

2.) The schools are now providing potentially dangerous drugs: Who is prescribing these drugs for the kids? Where's the doctors? These are not universally safe drugs. There are many drug interactions and side effects including a known link between the pill and breast cancer!

3.) The schools are now providing a means of abortion: Yep, that's what I said! It is a well known fact that a certain combination of the pills in the package will cause a first trimester abortion. BUT, many people do not realize that the pill, taken as it is prescribed, can also cause an abortion! Here's how it works: The first line of defense is supposed to prevent the pregnancy. But there is a second line of defense. If there is a conception (in other words, a baby is on the way), the second line makes the body so that it will not nurture the new baby, thus causing an abortion.

This is worse than a slippery slope. The real problem is not the state sacntioned immorality, or the dangers, the real problem is the abdication of responsibility by parents. Daily, tens of millions of parents are shipping their kids off to institutional schools where they are completely disconnected from what their kids are being told and taught!

Parents: you can homeschool. It is your responsibility.

Birth control measures such as pills and IUD operate on two levels: both making conception more difficult and by making implantation more difficult. There is a significant chance that a woman using either of those methods will have an egg/sperm meet in her body and then have it flushed out of her system when it harmlessly bounces off her uterine wall. That gets fundies really riled up apparently.

What should get then really riled up is that their god apparently does that like all the time. About half of all conceived embryos end up bouncing off the uterine wall, lost to the toilet without the woman ever knowing different. Indeed, while the chance of an embryo failing to implant is much higher when an IUD is in place, there is a much lower number of embryos to potentially implant because the IUD so efficiently kills sperm. So really, if you consider these implantation failures to be "abortions" then Jehova is doing many more of them than IUDs are, and he was doing even more of them in the Bronze Age when people had worse nutrition.

Note that the clinic is run by the city of Portland, not the school, that none of the parents seem to be protesting, and the lone objector is a Christian nut-case. Note also that, under Maine law, these students can get this kind of medical attention without their parents knowledge or permission because of state confidentiality laws. So, the clinic on school grounds may be a convenience, but any kid with a bus pass can take advantage of the same services at any clinic in the city.

Your argument is entirely ridiculous. To begin with, they're not promoting inmorality. They're just providing links to some organisations which may help teenagers, planned parenthood included, which would supply the contraconceptive pill TO WHOMEVER WHO DEMANDS IT. You're not in favour of that?, DON'T ASK FOR IT. Simple as that. Nobody is forcing you to take it or, better, to have sex.
The second afirmation is a patently false premise. The school only provides information and the prescription is handed by a doctor. In Maine, any med of this kind must be provided by medical prescription ONLY. If you're going to lie for Jesus, think if it's worth the effort.
And third, the theory of abortive contraconceptive pill has long been debunked. The pill works by supplying hormones which prevent ovulation and, therefore, fecundation. What happens is that, in a certain quantity, they could make the wall of the uterus more likely to reject a feconded egg if ever there is fecondation. But again, it's a byproduct, a side effect, not its main goal and, of course, not in the first trimester. You're confusing the pill with the B plan.

It seems clear to me that fundies have no wish that their children should be properly educated in all that pertains to living in the modern world with all that such implies.

Fine, say I. Home school the kids. Or in the case where they go to state schools, then they should not be taught anything other than how to count to 10, how to stitch and sew and cook and do hard manual labour(girls) . Boys should be taught how to drink beer, read (syllabically) the bible in a language they cannot hope to understand (viz confusing helpmate and help meet.. - one word vs two!), how to chew backy and how to abuse their wives and children. This educational programme could be embodied under the general heading of redneckery for knackers.

The benefit of following this course is that these benighted souls would eventually become an underclass, something like the helots in ancient Greece, and could eventually be enslaved and forced to labour for an educated class.

As the Lady Bracknell character in the 'Importance of Being Ernest' remarked, (something along the lines of) ignorance is a delicate bloom - touch it and the flower is gone. I concur.

So when ignorance eventually claims the rednecks as her own, they will no longer be in a position to act effectively without being directed by a superior, smart, wealthy and educated class that should benefit from redneck servitude. /Sarcasm.

2. What drugs? Schools are not allowed to prescribe, only a physician may prescribe a drug.

3. BC pills can cause a first trimester abortion? That's not an abortion, that's a failure to implant, happens all the time to people who are using no type of contraception and they never know about it.

Home schooled kids are going to be a major blight on the US in the next 20 years or so. What are we going to do with them? Physical labour jobs are leaving, technical jobs will go to those with education, so whats left is minimum wage service jobs. It will destroy the middle class and create a two tier system of wealth. But the fundies love the idea of serfdom don't they.

Just to play devil's advocate, is it really a good idea for schools to make these drugs freely available? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for proper sex education, but wouldn't it be better to provide condoms instead or to insist that even if a girl is on the pill she should have the guy use a condom anyway?

The reason I ask is because of the statistics that came out recently that showed that 1/4 teenage girls has some STD or STI. Wouldn't it be prudent to promote the condom given the circumstances?

Of course, I'm totally ignorant here, it's been maybe ten years since I had sex education in elementary and high school. For all I know they do actually promote using a condom over the pill for these reasons and probably even encourage using both. Does anyone know this for a fact?

I was homeschooled for awhile, and I got the pills starting when I was 12. (I had really long, heavy, awful periods, and the pills regulate it nicely.)

See, pills aren't always JUST used for birth control. I still use them to regulate my period (I work for eight straight days building hiking trails and it sucks having your period while you're doing that sort of work). I've still got my V-card in every imaginable way. I'm almost 20. Handing over some pills or BC patches doesn't automatically mean a kid is having sex. Maybe they have really difficult periods, like I did, or maybe they're just trying to be, you know, responsible and not bring unwanted children that they can't take care of into the world.

Then again, fundies are against contraception in any form - because that gives women AUTONOMY that fundy pastor assholes are so against. It takes CONTROL away from men, and that's what fundies are so big on - CONTROL.

Homeschooling in this lifestyle will fuck up kids for life. They will not respond well to social situations, employers, etc, because all they've been allowed to know is this so-called 'Biblically-based' horseshit. If anything, Bro. Randy's argument backfired - it's a bigger reason NOT to homeschool.

2- I agree. Birth control pills should be prescribed by medical professionals. I find it difficult to believe that a nurse or someone isn't involved. Maybe you should check.

3- You can use birth control pills as a morning after pill. If you take x amount in the first 72 hours after unprotected sex, you will prevent the fertilised egg (if there is one) from settling on the uterine wall. That is not the same as an abortion. Spouting that kind of nonsense is dangerous. Someone might read that and try and give themselves an 'abortion' by taking a whole pack of birth control pills, which won't abort the fetus, but might affect the development.

1. By passing out contraceptions, they are saying "protect yourself against STDs and unwanted pregnancies". They are not saying it is OK, they are merely accepting reality; that teenagers are going to have sex, no matter what adults tell them. You don't need contraceptives in order to have sex, you can "accomplish the goal" with or without them, stupid.

2. There must be some medical examination, surely, before pills are distributed, if indeed it happens at all.

3. Pure and utter nonsense. An abortion is a dislodging of an ongoing pregnancy, not a washing out of a fertilized egg. Something like 80 percent of all fertilized eggs are washed out naturally, anyway.

The state does not sanction any immorality; they are doing their best to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STDs in teenagers who are going to have sex with or without contraceptives, stupid.

Schools have many teachers, in different subjects, each an expert in his or her field. That is why you want to send your kids to school, to get the most extensive education possible. The upbringing; teaching your kid the Golden Rule, "Love thy neighbor as yourself", "That which you do to the least of my people, you do unto me", "Take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye", and whatever else of Jesus' teachings you want to convey, that is the parents' job.
