[Cardinal wants Christians to take legal action against The Da Vinci Code]
Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others. This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected.

You have a right to be tolerated. On the other hand, WE have a right to freedom of speech and the press, even if what we say offends you. Your right to be tolerated requires us to refrain from violence or threats against you, but we are not obligated to respect your delusions, tolerate the censorship you wish to impose, or share your whacko views. In fact, if we disagree with you and think you're completely crazy, we have the right to tell it to your face.
Great, let's strive to reach the level of religious fundamentalism where we have mobs torching houses and sending death threats to journalists, when a magazine publishes a cartoon image of Jesus with a condom strapped over his head.
I think the truly amazing thing about this is what Jesus said:
LUKE 11:46
Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! For ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
and a little later, what could be taken as a direct defence of gnosticism.
LUKE 11:52
Woe unto you, lawyers! For ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical."
As opposed to most of the time when we spend hours on end praying and chanting and other impratical things.
"So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others."
Cardinal code to English translator engaged:
"We will stomp on other peoples rights because they offend our delicate sensiblities. Smart people don't adequately respect my primitive superstitions and delusions. Waah, waah, waah."
Translator off.
"This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected."
If you had a respectable point of view, it would help us respect you, but you are asserting that an ancient fairy tale is fact. The brighter people really just can't respect that.
And why aren't they sueing allt hose other movie directors and writers who place Jesus in "bad" light.
I can't remember being respected being a right anywhere. A duty sure (think evil dictators. Respecting them was rather mandatory), but a right?
Sure, they might claim libel or slander, but can they proof the "victim" exists? If there is no victim, then there is no crime. No matter how many people belief that he is real. I can't sue people for being disrespectful to the invisible mini dragon I keep in my closet.
"but some know legal means"
In other words, he's considering a lawsuit if that's what it takes.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
If it only applies to one subgroup, then it's not a fundamental human right, is it, you stupid shit?
Good old Christian compassion; look out for your own, screw everybody else!
From Hebrews 11:36-7
"They had trial by mockings...scourgings...imprisonment...were stoned...tried...sawn asunder(cut in half)......died by slaughter with the sword...were in want, in tribulation, under ill treatment"
Whatever happened to suffering for your faith? Whining over a movie would make the early Christians roll over in their graves! Faith that needs such protection is no faith at all.
I, for one, completely support this idea of taking legal action against the movie, and I hope that a lot of people support it.
Because it will become publicized, the court will throw it out hard on its ass, and everyone that supported it will look that much more like an incredible idiot.
I was writing a reply to this, commenting that the movie that depicts Jesus in a bad light is The Passion of the Christ, which shows him as a helpless wacko pansy, and my computer froze and I had to reboot.
How ironic.
Well, not agreeing with your views on Christ doesn´t mean they are misrespecting Christ. He was just married, according to that version, for God´s sake!
It's a shitty book and a worse movie, but I don't think you should try and censor it.
And because Jesus Christ is a seperate entity from you, you cannot demand that he be respected as a "human right." It's like demanding that it's your right to have everyone respect your president/prime minister/fascist dictator/what-have-you.
Why does religion get a pass on the respect issue? Why are we not allowed to question your rediculous claims for fear of offending you? If you made stupid claims about economics or history no one would give a rats ass if the offended you in the refutation.
Why is religion afforded a special place?
You, of course, respect everyone, their religious or non-religious beliefs, and you respect every single deity which humans believe in.
Do unto others... and so on.
This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected
No, it's not. You do have the right to follow any religion you like, leave or change your religion and, within a few practical limits, to worship as and when you see fit. You do not have a right not to be offended.
No, it isn't, one of the human rights is to freely practice your religion, without being discriminated against for doing so. This book does not infringe on your ability to practice your religion.
Your human rights end where my human rights begin, ya know. Will you respect my atheistic non-belief just as much as you want your religious beliefs respected?
"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical."
- You mean like feed the poor, tend the sick and comfort the lonely, like your savior told you to? Oh, I see, you mean protest a book/movie, which your savior never even hinted you should do.
Yeah, keep obeying your savior cardinal.
Confused?
