I look at pictures of my city in the early 1950s or a typical surburban neighborhood and I wish we could go back to the golden days of this nation.

The closest thing I compare my paradise on earth to are the mountain towns of switzerland. The kind of places where you wakeup to the local church ringing its bells as the town funnels in for sunday service. The places where the term "foodtamps" has a "What is that?" meaning.

I like that place and in the US as it is now the only place that is close is montana which I will be moving to this summer.

and if you must know, no! I am not tolerant I HATE tolerance I don't want to tolerate a gay pride parade, I don't want to tolerate homeless people in public, I don't want tolerate exotic religions in my neighborhood. Call me what you want but I know that in the future things will got back to that when the moral tax payers are sick of the deadbeats!

Yes because racial segregation, lower pay for African Americans, blocking African Americans at the polls, the Korean War, when the word "communism" and all it's derivatives were taboo words, and women where expected to just be housewives and baby factories, etc. [/sarcasm]

Here's the thing JohnSnowe, there is no such thing as a true golden age. There are always problems in every era.

You wanna know something cool about the 50s? No personal computers, no internet, the constant threat of a Soviet nuclear attack, women driven to drink and do drugs to break the monotony of everyday life as a stay-at-home servant, etc. It wasn't a paradise and methinks someone has been watching too many reruns of black and white TV shows. The 50s never actually existed like that.

Do you get ALL of your knowledge from TV shows and movies? I'll bet you also think that the Japanese all ride around in giant robots and that Australians all live in the Outback and hunt dingoes with a knife.

Ah, yes, the good old days, when the poor had to stand for hours in lines at soup kitchens to avoid dying from starvation. But the soup kitchens just coddle the deadbeats, and the long lines create a public eyesore, too, so I suppose you'd want to outlaw soup kitchens along with food stamps, yes?

The homeless are in public because that's WHERE THEY LIVE. It would seem that you'd be very happy to see them in public, because when they're sleeping on the sidewalk, it proves that your precious tax dollars aren't going toward their room and board, and you get the added bonus of seeing them suffer for their laziness. So, for you, win-win! Why complain?

Just try living on Food Stamps, you ignorant MoFo, and then come back and tell us again about how all the lazy "deadbeats" are getting such an easy, free ride because they just don't want to work. You'll be hungrier than you've ever been in your life.

Food Stamps have been around a long time, and although you only get them once a month, they barely last two weeks. Like every other shamefully inadequate program we have for the poor, they keep you just barely alive, and nothing more.

As for the homeless, many are mentally ill. It was your right-wing messiah, Ronald Reagan, who put so many mentally ill people in California out of the state institutions on the pretense of giving them more humane treatment in their own communities, but then never funded the communities to house or take care of them, because that would be, you know, eeevil "big government". The rest of the states eventually followed suit.

How to eliminate:
Gay pride parades: Stop oppressing gays, then they have no need of marching.
Homeless people in public: Contribute to shelters and work rehab programs, so these people can stop being homeless.
Religions in your neighborhood: Urge city council to declare a religion free zone, including your own as a sign of good faith.

Yes we tax payers are sick of your deadbeat churches fleecing people and not paying taxes on thier take. Cmon nobody likes a dishonest thief

What, specifically, do gay pride, homelessness and (as you refer to them) 'exotic religions' have to do with being immoral? Or a deadbeat?

On a side note, good for you - not many people are so comfortable with being such an unlikable assclown that they're willing to proclaim it to the rafters (like you just did).

Does JohnSnowe really believe that every single neighborhood in the early 1950s was a clean, prosperous, safe, and wholesome place? Even back then, there were slums, ghettos, rural backwaters, and other economically blighted regions. There were red-light districts in major cities where porn and prostituion were overlooked by the authorities.

To borrow a term from the Roman poet Horace, this schmuck is "longing for the consulship of Plancus." Some other poet had written some maudlin verses about how much better things were in his childhood, when a man named Plancus was consul. Horace essentially said that people have always behaved in much the same manner throughout history, and that even during Plancus's term, people still swindled each other, beat each other up, cheated on their spouses, etc. But things just look better through the golden mists of nostalgia!

Ah, yes, the golden age of the US.

Back when paint and petrol still had lead in, gross, wasteful and conspicuous consumption of goods became the sum and entire measure of a person to the exclusion of any and all other virtues, married women were effectively under permanent house arrest, blacks were segregated, homosexuals and rebellious teenagers were given icepick lobotomies, you could utterly and permanently destroy the life of anyone you didn't like, frequently with full state support, merely by breathing the word "communist" in their direction, and nobody had figured out that Edward Teller, despite a flair for particle physics, was a fucking lunatic.
