While Muslim fundies can be destructive, Islam itself was founded on peace. Of course, taking into account the Abrahamic god, it's no surprise so many people turned out bad...

Not quite true. The Wahhabists are among the worst offenders in regards to hatered and violence. They make up the richest part of Islam's adherents (in fact, Wahhabism is frequently referred to as Petro-Islam), and sponsors approximately 90% of all expenses of the Islamic faith. Needless to say, they have a vast number of adherents, although definite statistics are surprisingly hard to chase up. A minimum number is 40 million - the Sunni (Wahhabist, under Saudi law) population of Saudi Arabia, plus a very conservative equal-again estimator of extra-Saudi adherents. My instinct is that Wahhabism makes up at least 20% of Islam today, probably 35-40% (half the Sunni sect of Islam's total), and growing daily. And it explicitly calls upon its followers to wage jihad against all non-Muslims.
Mat, if the government of Saudi Arabia stopped being Wahhabi tomorrow, the citizens wouldn't keep it up. A minority (conservative religious specialists) most likely would, but numbers of people that ritual is forced on are not the same as numbers of people that would be active spreaders of the religion if it wasn't forced, so you can't count the entire population of Saudi Arabia as committed to the ideology. I'll agree with you that they're in control of too big a share of the money though.
