I don't care who wants to bastardize the definition...but hating gays is not homophobic...a phobia is a fear of something
if you hate bananas, you're not bananaphobic

Well, besides making such a stupid case... are you saying you are NOT afraid of homosexuals? I guess that whole bit about "teh homosexual agenda", and how "your kids are being brainwashed", and that "christians are a persecuted minority" was just your hatred... because obviously no straight, redblooded american would be afraid of gays *snicker*
Yes you are. An irrational fear is an irrational fear. If you were to go around calling banana's derogatory names for no reason, and then beat them up, it would show that you have a deep-seated problem with bananas, and a name would be attached to it.
I had a friend who was afraid of bananas. She got conditioned because every time her dad would eat a banana at breakfast, she would smell his aftershave while she ate her cereal, and would therefore, get very nauceated.
Now she can't be in the same room as a banana. Haha, I'm not joking.
Well, an irrational hatred is still a phobia.
Look it up in a dictionary, kid.
Anyway, I'd say that irrational claims of a 'gay agenda,' delusions of persecution and a violent "get them before they get me" response to homosexuals points to fear as the stimulus.
Homophobia is a form of fear. Underlying it are false assumptions about gays: that they are pedophiles and that they attempt to "recruit" people into homosexuality (see JaSon's ProLife post on fstdt). Otherwise, why care about them one way or another, since without these false assumptions, they have no effect on your life?
Homophobia is the hatred and/or fear of homosexuals and homosexuality: Homophobia is the fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals. It can also mean hatred, hostility, or disapproval of homosexual people, sexual behavior, or cultures, and is generally used to insinuate bigotry. The term homophobic means "prejudiced against homosexual people," and a person who is homophobic is a homophobe. --Wiki
Homophobia isn't fear of gay people, it's fear of being gay. Homophobes are petrified of the possibility that they're gay, and the ones that are tend to be the ones that lash out the hardest against other gay people.
His point is purely semantic, but he's right. A phobia is an irrational fear , not an irrational hatred .
While it's true that hatred can be the product of fear, it isn't always that way, and we shouldn't regard all those who hate as doing so from fear.
Well you know, generally arachnaphobes hate spiders, and hydrophobes hate water, etc. People most strongly hate the things that they fear.
I checked The Phobia List and there is no 'official' name for a fear of bananas, or even for fruit. FSTDTers, I think we have to name this new medical condition. Suggestions to this thread.
(I'm kidding, the OP is a dumbass, but I think naming the phobia of bananas would be kind of cool).
It so happens I don't like bananas, but it's not a phobia. It's not an overreaching irrational fear that controls my life. I don't see a "banana agenda" trying to get that fruit onto restaurant menus, nor are bananas in the produce section trying to "recruit" me to buy and enjoy them. Fundies, on the other hand, see gheys another way entirely.
And redefining something doesn't change what it actually is. A phobia is defined as an irrational fear of something (as opposed to , say, a fear of sharks, which is rational).
I hate yogurt, because of it's bitterness. I also hate WWE wrestling because if I wanted to see pretend fighting, I'd watch a Bruce Lee or Jacky Chan film. It's not a fear of it.
Have you been abused by gays 24/7 for all your life ccnuggie? No? Well then. You have nothing to be afraid of gays. Because there's no reason to. Thus the fear of gays is irrational. Ergo, homophobia.
QED.

Fear of Bananas (at least the real reason how they came to be and the denial of such): Comfortphobia.
If you spend hours on the entire spewing about how disgusting bananas are, and try to get legislation passed to ban bananas from every grocery store in the country, and take a baseball bat into the store with you so that you can smash all the crates of bananas...you might just be bananaphobic, know what I'm sayin???
Perhaps, but if you hate bananas to the point of outlawing them, destroying them, and making life difficult for anyone that does openly profess their preference to bananas, it becomes irrational. Ergo, a phobia.
What would you say if someone went around saying the following:
- Bananas will force their way into our churches!
- If we let bananas marry, soon people will be marrying animals/children/corpses/cars!
- If bananas marry then the birth rate will drop disastrously!
- Bananas want to turn our children into bananas!
- God will smite us for tolerating bananas!
Would you say that such a person was exhibiting irrational fear? I certainly would.
A phobia is an aversion to something; such an aversion can be expressed as fear, hatred, or disgust. While the Greek word phobos , from which phobia is derived, means fear (and is the name of the Greek god of such), that does not mean phobia must also mean fear .
Modern words don't mean exactly the same thing as their ancient roots.
For example, psychotropic does not mean soul-nourishing . Agoraphobia does not mean fear of marketplaces . The word comedy is not about singing. Atomic does not mean indivisible.
Confused?
