The benefits of intact biological families were emphasized on a "Building a Marriage Culture" panel at the National Review Institute's 2013 Summit, "The Future of Conservatism." One of the panelists, Doug Mainwaring, spoke of his personal experience as a gay man who came to realize that his own children need both a mother and a father.
"For a long time I thought, if I could just find the right partner, we could raise my kids together, but it became increasingly apparent to me, even if I found somebody else exactly like me, who loved my kids as much as I do, there would still be a gaping hole in their lives because they need a mom," Mainwaring, co-founder of National Capital Tea Party Patriots, said.
Mainwaring is now living with his ex-wife so they can co-parent their two teenaged sons.
"I don't want to see children being engineered for same-sex couples where there is either a mom missing or a dad missing," Mainwaring explained. "Somebody needs to stand up for the rights and needs of children in an age when the selfishness of adults seems to be trumping those rights."
Mainwaring receives many surprised reactions when he explains that he is both gay and a conservative. Someone asked him once, "You're gay, how can you be a conservative?"
The audience laughed and clapped as he recalled his reply: "You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"

Riiiiight, because monogamous, long term, heterosexual parents never produce gay offspring. [/sarcasm] I personally know more homosexuals who were raised by two heterosexual parents than by homosexual or single parents.
Whether you think evolution is correct or belief in creationism, you have to be a very dumb fuck to think that children come out wrong if they don't have a mommy and a daddy.
Now, would everybody that lost a parent at an early age please step forward, you're allowed to punch Mainwaring in the face once.
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
Somehow this is even more offensive than the idea that gay couples can't be good parents. This whole idea that liberals are totally depraved people who want to destroy the country is bad enough, but they put that label on anyone who's less conservative than Rush Limbaugh.
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
You're an adult, and one of your teenage children comes out to you as gay. How can you be conservative?
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
Becasue my children are both female
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
Because when my children are living in the 2050's I don't want them to think they are in the 1950's
You are far from an adult. You're a liar, and you're a fraud. I highly doubt you have an IQ above 100 and I certainly doubt you arrived to this idiotic idea on your own. Just because your tiny little brain can't fathom how two fathers or two mothers can raise children, doesn't mean it isn't possible. Finally, if you want to be a traitor to equal rights, at least have the decency to admit it LIKE A MAN, and not hide behind your kids like the little wimp that you are!
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
He always knew that someone would ask him the gay conservative question and he had this completely meaningless answer already lined up.
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
Because I wouldn't want them to become self-loathing conservative fucktards like you.
"You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
One would think that by asking such a fatuous question you've already answered it.

Are the sons his? How did he get to have an ex-wife? DM prefers to bring his children up in a loveless relationship rather than giving them the chance of having two parents who love each other. How is that "standing up for the rights of children"?
Well gay people are people. And people can be stupid. This is some really weird "think of the children" crap.
What is this saying, exactly? A gay person who has kids can't have a same sex partner because it just screws everything up? When parents are divorced they cease to be "real parents," or...? What? Who is "engineering" children? That makes it sound like they plop out of an assembly line... And who can prove that a kid has a right to a mother and father? Are single or widowed parents needing to have their kids taken away automatically, then?
No explanation is offered as to why exactly a child needs a mother and a father to be fulfilled, and why these roles couldn't be performed just as well by persons of either gender, or by one parent.
Perhaps it's of benefit to have two parents in a society where having two parents is the norm. But there's nothing inherent about humans which dictates that a child cannot be brought up by one person, two people, or many people.
The nuclear family is actually a fairly recent innovation in the history of the family.

Oh, I dunno. Better ask Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John & his brother Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John in 20 or so years from now. About their fathers Elton John and David Furnish.
...oh, and that's Sir Elton to you, seeing as he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music and charitable services.
Your own children 'need both a mother and a father'? Consider Zachary and Elijah. Your argument is invalid , Douggie-boy.
Seems like someone has been brainwashed. Children need love, acceptance and guidance; the plumbing on the parent isn't really that important. There are plenty of children raised by a single parent that are perfectly healthy, well adjusted individuals.
"Somebody needs to stand up for the rights and needs of children in an age when the selfishness of adults seems to be trumping those rights."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You have NO room to say that when you are indoctrinating your children.
Are you sure you're gay, Dougie? It seems more likely that you're bisexual.
My dad lost his dad when he was five months old. He spent a lot of time with his uncle and aunt. You don't need a FATHER to have a male role model. My father-in-law was also five months old when he lost his dad. He had five older sisters and one older brother to help taking care of him. My colleague lost his mother when he was young, and was brought up by his formidable grandmother. All three are sociable and productive members of society.

Well there's your problam! Everything that comes out of national review is folloew by fail.
Didn't your kids already HAVE a mom? How did they come to exists, btw? Didn't you say you were gay? Or did you marry and have kids just to conform to normality, to not be shunned by your congregation? How is that not selfish? How is that standing up for the rights and needs of children; to just get kids because you are supposed to get kids?
They are probably liberal because they want their children to live in a country with human rights, for the children to continue to fight for human rights for everyone. You can never stop fighting for human rights, sadly, because there are always reactionary people, who'd love to revoke those rights, lurking in the shadows.
So we've got a single gay male claiming, based on personal anecdote, that children require both a male and female parent on the one hand.
On the other we've got the American Academy of Pediatricians claiming the opposite, based on more than 30 years of actual research demonstrating the healthy development of children of same-gender couples.
I know which claim I find more credible.
> "You're an adult, you have children, how can you be a liberal?"
Actually, this reads like an argument against stereotyping.
I had a mother and a father, Doug, both of whom hated me. Now go ahead and tell me how lucky I am, so I'll have an excuse to kick your insensitive ass. Children need love. Period.
Confused?
