Dave states that evolution is pointless, without goal or purpose. This is what drives athiests to existentialism, bitterness, and early demise.

Methinks you assigned the word pointless.
Evolution, given enough time, fills environmental niches, thus enhancing the bio-diversity, making for a planet more full of life and wonder than you can possibly fathom.
Your second paragraph is a non-sequitor, and chock full of outright lies.
How Christian of you.
"Dave states that evolution is pointless, without goal or purpose."
That's...not entirely true...without even looking at the premise. True, evolution is not seeking a pinnacle, or an endpoint, it IS seeking what best suits the here and now. That said, figuring that out requires cracking a book, so...
Worrying about whether evolution is pointless or not is kind of like worrying about the sun becoming a red giant in another 5 billion years. The idea that evolution has no particular direction is irrelevant, since none of us will be here for more than two or three generations. This has nothing to do with whether one's own life has a "purpose" - that's a whole different use of the word.
hey, folks... wait til you read what he followed it up with after being called on his bullshit. even better!
"Forgive me the latitude. To reiterate, then: This is perhaps that which drives athiests who are existentialists and/or bitter to existentialism and bitterness with a probably result of early demise. Although anecdotal, bitterness has been associated with existentialism, though no causal factors have been expressly proven or denied. Similarly, early demise cannot be attributed to bitterness or existentialism, or for that matter, atheism. Likewise, early demise cannot be directly attributed to atheism, existentialism, or bitterness. For that matter there may be no such thing as "early demise." There is however, some considerable evidence that atheism is associated with the lack of good humor, or vice-versa, but I digress."
you heard it here first, folks. Atheism is proven in studies to be assosciated with a lack of sense of humour.
Nobody said it's pointless. I think you're misunderstanding what exactly the phrase "without a goal" means.
It just means evolution isn't aiming to create "higher and higher" beings. It's merely a process by which species adapt to their environments.
JD beat me to it.
Assuming 'Dave' is Runny Babbit, the OP of the thread, RJL is twisting what he said. He was trying to clear up some creationist misconceptions about evolution. Typically, the point went straight over RJL's head.
Ignoring the bullcrap 2nd sentence, evolution's purpose is the same as Christianity's & those of other religions: To answer humanity's greatest questions. Particularly the question of how life came to be.
So it does indeed have a goal. The method just doesn't involve pulling anything out of one's ass.
Hmm...I don't think you know what existentialism is. Yes, there is no intrinsic meaning to life, but that's why it must be created. This involves thinking for yourself which you are far from able to do at present, but there is still the possibility.
“Dave states that evolution is pointless,”
Pretty sure Dave would have said that any ‘point’ to evolution is inherent in the biology, not imposed from outside by a creator.
“without goal”
Yes. In the computer games ‘civilization’ there’s a chart showing what basic science you need to reasearch before you can achieve nuclear-missile-carrying submarines. There’s no forward-goals on the evolutionary tree, just stuff that happens.
“or purpose.”
Well, the purpose of biology is to reproduce in a new generation, the WAY biology does that makes evolution HAPPEN. Don’t confuse the two.
"This is what drives athiests to existentialism,”
No. You’re the only one with a ‘problem’ that evolution doesn’t have a goal. We’re okay with that fact.
“bitterness,”
Bitterness? HAH! What would we be bitter AT? We could be bitter at God for making cancer or eye worms. But we don’t believe he’s to blame for anything. Why be bitter at the eye worm for finding a niche to dominate? Or be bitter at biology for working the way biology works?
You’re trying very hard to project, here.
“and early demise.”
Asimov lived to the age of 72.
Confused?
