@ Xotan:
I see. Well, if you people think you have it bad for no longer being able to understand Americans, well, that's nothing compared to what those of us who live in America have to deal with. There does not seem to be anything we can do to stop these Christofascists from coming to power. I am only capable of feeling one emotion when it comes to other countries, and that is envy. It is a total travesty that intelligent people get no respect here in the United States. I don't know if any of you have heard that Social Security has run out of money? And of course, we all KNOW whose fault that is, and we also know that they will never ever admit it. I think I have said here a few times that if things do not improve, then as soon as I can afford it, I'm leaving forever. I refuse to share a country with bigoted morons.
If you've noticed, a perennial comment on this very site involves somebody from a Western country that is not the United States exhorting Americans to give up their violent, warlike, bigoted, superstitious, ignorant, religiously-fundamentalist, insular, and hateful ways. And of course, if you exhort the entire country like that, then you exhort everyone in it. And I am tired of being exhorted. Culturally, I do not consider myself American at all. Apparently, Nietzsche absolutely hated Germany, especially German nationalists, and especially people who called him German. He wanted to be thought of as something more international. I feel the same way towards Americans. It is also true that the schools that EU diplomats send their children to actively teach said children not to be prejudiced and to be civilized and enlightened human beings, not to mention polyglots. There is no equivalent here. If I could, I would create the equivalent here, but I am a student myself; I have no resources! I have given more rants on this subject than every other American commenter on FSTDT combined. Ezra Pound made only one true statement in his entire career; namely, the line from one of his poems which I paraphrased in my last post. Even clocks manufactured by fascists are right twice a day, to mix metaphors. (That very metaphor shows the stupidity of Americans, as every other country uses the far more sensible 24-hour system of reckoning time.) We Americans are forever fifty or sixty years behind the rest of the world. I for one, do not wish to be left behind by the rest of the world.
You know what, I think the boorish folks who say "America, love it or leave it" may be right. I cannot in good conscience love America unconditionally, so I may very well be forced by my own beliefs to leave and never return for any reason. I hope it does not come to that.
