[About a transgendered person who was fired after coming out to his boss.]
"Activists will no doubt attempt to use this case to lobby to have the nebulous concept of 'gender identity' added as a category meriting special protection under federal law," said Caleb H. Price, research analyst for Focus on the Family.
"Americans have no interest in seeing their tax dollars spent on ‘transgender’ individuals seeking to indulge their confusion — let alone the expenses involved in defending the Library of Congress’ sound decision not to hire Mr. Schroer."

If the Library of Congress fired a person for being transgendered (not for any job performance issues, dishonesty, etc.), I am truly disappointed in them. I need to look this up.
And Caleb doesn't speak for me. I don't want to go back to the days when American tax dollars were used to smoke gays and other people considered "undesirable" out of federal positions.
I wouldn't classify someone who has clearly made a big commitment (physically, emotionally, and financially) to have a complete change of gender as "confused." That's a huge decision to make and I don't think any sane person would decide to go through with it if they weren't completely sure.
And personally, I would rather see tax dollars go to that than some of the other things they're being spent on these days.
Gender pronouns should be fixed here. It's Ms. Schroer -- or, since it's relevant to the job, Colonel Schroer. (Yes, they rescinded a job offer to a former special-forces colonel who had done counter-terrorism work; because gender identity is so much more important in a researcher than actual experience in the field and a whole network of connections.)

No, you are 100% correct. Americans prefer their tax money to go to:
- Israel
- War and killing of innocent human beings
- Invade and occupy sovereign states while complaining when others do the same, also know as hypocritical.
- Stuff the pockets of the already rich ones using no-bid contracts to siphon off tax money.
- Leave their fellow citizens to die on the street because taxes are theft and the average American gives a shit about their fellow human beings but are eager to fill the pockets of slimy insurance companies.
And you know something is seriously fucked up in a society where nudity is censored but violence is worshiped.

I don't think the transgendered deserve "special rights", I think they deserve the same rights to not be discriminated against in the workplace that every other citizen of this country enjoys.

You're right I don't want my tax dollars spent to indulge anybody's confusion sexual, religious or otherwise. I do however have an intrest in my tax dollar being spent to ensure that every person in the united states is equal under the law. Once you take away the rights of one group, you make it that much easier to take them away from the rest of us.
What if this guy paid HIS operation?, after all, he came out to the boss, which means that he did the operation LONG ago. By the way, what if the tax-payers don't want to have a fundy idiot in their job?, would you be that supportive?

Really? I love librarians. I have always found them to be helpful, kind individuals and people who love their jobs. (Though I assume there is at least one bad librarian in the world, of course...I certainly don't want to be a fundamentalist about it! ;) )
Assuming Mr./Ms. Schroer was not one of the latter, I have no problem with him/her needing money to defend his/her right to work at his/her chosen profession. Since his/her change of gender wouldn't affect his/her ability to properly shelve books and help people looking for them, I have no problem with Mr./Ms. Schroer using tax money to fight injustice.
Olbermann made the Library of Congress the Worst Persons in the World over this issue. Apparently the transgendered person was a former US Special Forces operative and an acknowledged expert on international terrorism (the best in the LoC, apparently).
So not only it is discriminatory, it's also stupid!
The submitters note needs editing. Ms. Schroer is female-identified, and referring to her as a male is misinformation at best, and transphobia at worst.
That and it really fucking pisses me off, because we are meant to be the intelligent, enlightened side, and I am sick of seeing more idiocy regarding transsexuals coming from our members than our fundies.
@ ScrewedUpDollie
Since we're usually pretty good about issues like this (and since the original article is no longer up, making it impossible to check) It's probable that the transgendered person in question was never specified as being MtF or FtM (or which gender s/he identified as)
Which would have made it difficult to know which pronoun to use.
@Vana: Look at professor M's comment.
Also, if focus on the family talk about a transsexual and use male pronouns, you can be pretty sure that transsexual is an MTF. They make a point of mis-gendering us.
@ ScrewedUpDollie
Yes, I already saw that comment. However, Prof M seemed to know more about the story than, possibly, what was given in the original article.
While I have no doubt Caleb, the fundy being quoted, misused the "Mr" prefix, I doubt it was the intention of Captain Janeway, the submitter, to misuse the "his" pronoun in her notes. I know it's common for assholes to purposely use the wrong pronouns when talking about trans people. However, I have personally encountered several stories involving transgendered people where I had no idea what the proper pronoun was. It’s often difficult to tell whether the pronouns used in news stories are those describing the person’s biological gender or actual gender, even in the articles that are supportive of trans-people. While you're correct that you can make a pretty educated guess that whatever pronoun Focus on the Family is using, you should probably use the opposite, there is still enough uncertainty that jumping on people who are supportive of trans-people isn't really called for.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
