Smoking was officially banned for US domestic airlines in 1998. Most of them had no smoking policies long before that because other passengers didn't like breathing secondhand smoke in the recirculated air. Some countries still allow it.

since marriage is a secular contract giving you certain legal rights and obligations the definition can be expanded to cover anything the majority of people want.

First off, no liberal wants pedophilia or bestiality to be the law of the land. Second, the nuclear family hasn't been the dominant family structure for a long time. Third, the definition of marriage is simple: A legal or religious partnership between two adults not related by blood.

Allowing same-sex marriage isn't going to suddenly turn more people gay. And banning same-sex marriage isn't going to make gay people turn straight and become part of a "traditional nuclear family", either. So that whole argument is pointless.

If you look at the comment thread, Gonzo is actually sticking up for gays...in his own way. I mean, he's at least explaining why conservatives shouldn't freak out over gay marriage (e.g. morality won't crumble, your marriage won't be affected, etc.). Well, props to Gonzo on this one for being the voice of reason. And I can't believe I'm saying that.

You "redefined" black people from property to humans , and nothing horrible happened. I bet you can "redefine" marriage from legal contract between two consenting adults who intends to live together indefinitely to legal contract between two consenting adults who intends to live together indefinitely without anything horrible happening, too. Look at us here in Europe; most countries now have some form of gay marriage/partnership, and it hasn't led to anything other than adults getting married to adults that they love.
I'd say the left has returned the language to what is actually happening (from “streamlining” to “layoffs”), pointed out what opponents are doing behind closed doors (who are the Koch brothers sponsoring and why?) and supported “small” victims against multi-conglomerates. And swept up the chips that the selfish ultra-rich has scattered around them.
The reason why smoking is banned in airplanes. The risk of fire (the worst possibility) and the possibility of smoke inhalation if the smoke spreads, is extremely dangerous at such a high altitude because you can't call the firefighters when you're thousands of feet in the air, can you? Gay marriage harms no one but your delicate sensibilities. Any arguments otherwise make no scientific sense. Child marriage, pedophilia, and bestiality is considered wrong is because it harms people and because these people cannot give consent. It's just not comparable.
