Well, you can either see the collapse of the western roman empire as the end of rome, which would mean that the roman empire died around 500 AD. Or you can (IMHO correctly) see the Byzantine empire (=eastern roman empire) as rightful successor to the roman empire, which would mark 1453 (when constantinople was conquered) as year of the final destruction of the roman empire.

But no matter which of the 2 years you take, fact is that the roman empire, when it collapsed, was a christian empire.
In case of the byzantine empire it were even "christian" knights who shortened the lifespan of the empire, when they, out of greediness, sacked constantinople during their 4th crusade, instead of foghting against the "enemies of christendom"
