A dictionary defines meanings of words, not everyone's arbitrary connotations. Look it up, you'll see.

@toth: English is a Germanic language with heavy Romance influence rather than a true Romance language, but your point holds in any case. If we're talking deep roots (as our friend seems to be) then any language that's not wholly artificial can trace its origins back long before Jesus.

Oh, and looking at his other posts:

Firstly, I want the record to show that this wanker does *not* represent the mainstream of the Church of England in any way. Secondly, the CoE was founded long after English was the established language in this part of the world.

My point: This is English of about the 900s. It is still very close to its Germanic roots. It had come to England about 400 years previously as a pagan language. The Britons then would have spoken a Celtic language, the ancestor of modern Welsh. They were Christians. So the prior claim would go to them, I'm afraid. Moreover, they got their Christianity from the Romans as part of the Empire, so Latin has an even earlier claim.

You do realize that language evolves, including connotation? Connotation comes from how people use the word. From what I understand, the word "fuck" used to be a completely acceptable word. Now, to many people, it is not. "Retarded" used to be a good descriptor for someone or something that was slowed or prevented from developing in some way. Now people use it as an insult. Many words have suffered this fate, and other words have gone the other way.

I will. . . would call, if I used the word, myself "godless", because yes, it is true, but that means something very different from when YOU call me godless, because you, despite your claims, do not mean it to be an accurate descriptor. If you did, you would find a different way to say it, or you are insensitive to connotation (though I doubt the latter since you are quite aware of the existence of connotation, and specifically for that word).

You would actually have a better case if you didn't try to claim the whole fucking language was that way. In Spanish "adios" (goodbye, lit. to god) and apparently "ojala" (expressing a wish or hope ('I wish to god' in essence), an adoption from the habits of the Islamic people some of the Spanish people came into contact with) could probably have a case made for them, and -their- connotation now is completely nonreligious.

Anyway, go get yourself the most complete English dictionary you can find and tell me how many "christian" words there are and how many are just plain old "we need some way to say X" words. Language is about expression, period. It develops from a need to abstract things and tell them to others (the berries are on the big bushes over the next hill). As a consequence of people following religions, there require words to be coined or adopted to communicate those ideas. That doesn't make the whole language a development of that religion.

In German, there is the idiom "Sabbathssünder" (sabbath-sinner), used disapprovingly (if often jokingly) for people who do annoying loud domestic work on official holidays. Therefore, German is a Jewish language*.
There is also the idiom "a Mekka for (demographic)", so German is a Judeo-Islamic language!
And then there is the idiom "das Kriegsbeil begraben" (to bury the tomahawk - to end conflict), so German is a Judeo-Islamic-Amerind language!

Meanwhile English is a homosexual language: Gay, faggot, queer, lesbian, lesbic, sapphic, sodomy...

* Actually, a sitable number of German words is of Hebrew origin, by the way of Yiddish (which, of course, is indeed "Jewish German") and usually Rotwelsch (German argot), such as "Schlamassel", "veräppeln", "betucht". I do not know if exterminating such terms was a high priority when the Nazis tried to redefine the German language.

Ever think that it might be the "a xxx bunch" we're offended about? We're individuals, who have all reached our atheism in different ways.

Godless implies that we're missing something, but we don't. It's a bit like "childless couple". Technically, I shouldn't be offended, as that is a fact; we don't have children. But it sounds like we're lesser people because of that, and we're not. We are very contempt with our lives and don't miss children in the slightest. We have more money than our child-having friends, and more free time on our hands, and we get the sleep we need. Plus, we get to work on time, as we don't have kids starting bawling at kindergarten and won't let go of daddy.

As about 60 percent of the English language is derived from Latin, at one time or another, it's no wonder it's full of Christianity, as Latin is the language of the Catholic Church.

Christian mythology is Christian mythology? Oh, your deduction skills are truly marvelous. Marvel, that's comics.
What about the English words Easter, Wednesday, February; are they Christian? Nah, not so much.
