So would I. It being a Clint Eastwood* in reverse; said family talking to empty air, because Atheism isn't a religion, therefore there's no such thing as Atheist chaplains.

There's Crisis Councillors, sure; the DoD would probably contract civilian staff, experienced in this matter.

Whenever I see this argument, I can only assume these people have never been to a funeral or had a pastor try to comfort them after the death of a loved one. In my experience, they briefly mention how the suffering has ended, and maybe how they've gone onto a better place, and then they move on and try to be helpful or comforting without just talking endlessly about heaven and death. And funerals are kind of a joke to me. The ones I've been to generally involve a little "better place" talk, much more about Jesus being the way to salvation, and an awful lot of someone who never really knew the person regurgitating stories and weird homilies about them.

Let's get video of my grandpa's funeral, when his pastor told the funny story of how he picked up the phone and tried to call Jesus a few days before he died. The whole crowd just rolled their eyes collectively because even if it wasn't bullshit, we still had a creepy, wannabe-televangelist illustrating just how far out of your gourd morphine can put you.

The whole atheist chaplain thing is a bit odd, but I get the reasoning, it provides counciling to soldiers in the field that aren't believers and need someone to help them rather than guilt trip and prosyletize.

In terms of how it would go, my guess is along the lines of, "I'm sorry to inform you about the death of (soldier). They fell in battle protecting the other members of their squad. They told me often that they thought about you and missed you. If you'd like we can set up proper funerary arrangements for them, and if you need any help please contact us."

But then I'm not like Junker who seems to think that only JAYSUS gives people empathy.

EVERYONE'S rotting corpse is lying stinking outside in a pine box after death, numbskull. Whatever religion you have does not change that fact. The loss is even greater if you don't believe you're going to see them in an afterlife, asshole!

If I were as stupid and sociopathic as you, I'd say to a Christian family of a fallen soldier "Who cares, you'll all meet later. This is just a short break. Just go and continue with your life as though he was still fighting. Have a great day!"

Consoling, no scare-quotes needed, is much the same regardless of religion, really. You show empathy with the grieving, say something about the departed one being at peace, or not in pain anymore. As the saying goes; Shared joy is twice the joy, shared grief is half he grief.

My grandpa was Mormon. People came up to me at the funeral and told me that he was going straight to hell for all the coffee he drank.
At atheist funerals, if someone says the deceased is going to Hell, it’s either a joke or the start of a funny anecdote from the dead guy’s life. “See, we were coming back from Tijuana when Deadite suddenly says, Hey! We forgot…”
