Social Darwinism was a bizarre misinterpretation of science by capitalists who knew nothing of either the facts behind evolution or the proper relationship between natural and social sciences. It has been abandoned as harmful by most of Western society--it's only still practiced by the ever-capitalist right of American politics. To say that it is synonymous with "rational thinking" is not only incorrect, but so completely misinformed that I can only conclude you simply heard the phrase and have no idea whatsoever what it means.

Given the utter economic power of the USA, Britain and now China (they're so capitalist now it's just bullshit) and the high living standards of Europe under rational socialism I'd say all this rational capitalism and communism is working out about as good as its going to get. The real enemy in this case has been extremism, extremist libertarianism/capitalism gave us slavery, colonialism and rampant death among the poor while Extreme Communism brought us a cold war and stagnated the economic development of countries under it by funneling huge money to corrupt officials.

Religion is idealism. Idealism (as in "people think things should always go toward dogmatically pre-defined ideal condition") is opposed to rationalism (as in "people think things should always go toward whatever's actually reasoned as the best solution for the situation").
If you say wars are fought over these two opposite reasons, congratulations, you might as well say that "people fight wars because they think it's a good idea."
