BALLA, India (Reuters) - Five armed men burst into the small room and courtyard at dawn, just as 21-year-old, 22-week pregnant, Sunita was drying her face on a towel.
They punched and kicked her stomach as she called out for her sleeping boyfriend "Jassa", 22-year-old Jasbir Singh, witnesses said. When he woke, both were dragged into waiting cars, driven away and strangled.
Their bodies, half-stripped, were laid out on the dirt outside Sunita's father's house for all to see, a sign that the family's "honor" had been restored by her cold-blooded murder.

Fundamentalists can't bear to lose their grip on any sort of power, small or large, no matter how perverse. The continuing obsession with female virginity and the bullshit charade of "honor" is a pet subject of mine. Its interesting, in a horribly visceral way, how it spans across the globe. From "honor" murders to purity balls to FGM, its all about control and oppression. However, as The Watcher rightly states, violence does not solve violence. The only way to make a lasting change is to completely overhaul the mindsets of people. Teach them that women and girls are human, not public toilets, and they do not have to apologise and fear violence just for being alive and living.
Moreover, root out the disgusting misogyny and the power culture that causes this shit. Religion will die with it. It is only a backup to it anyway, a stopgap used to justify this kind of behaviour as worthy when it is really barbaric.
We need plenty of fire, it's the only way to be sure more of the stupid doesn't escape.

Honor killings...disgusting. Funny, though, how Christians will invariably see such acts as primitive, crude and indicative of an inherent evil in non-Christian religions, when really it serves almost as effectively as a window into the forgotten past and hidden present of their own religion. These killings are just one of the thousands of the flavors of suffering that is poured out into the world by the duplicitous entity known only as religion. Of course, it is not like anyone being empowered by this ogre's presence would dare to admit this.

You know, as sick as this is, I'm almost as pissed off at the people in the peanut gallery spouting comments like "we should bomb them all" and "nuke 'em that'll show them". Because bombing everyone we hate is so much more admirable.
Yeah, I guess I didn't quite word that as well as I could have. In truth one of my bigger flaws is that I put less thought into how I word things than I do into what I actually want to say, and sometimes it comes back to bite me in the ass. I would just edit it, but editing something I said after people have already read and taken offense to it almost feels like cheating to me.
Also, I'm probably taking these comments too seriously, which is odd because I'm usually the first to say that anything said on the internet should be taken with a grain of salt the size of Texas. I'm sure that if you gave these people the option of actually dropping bombs on Bumfuck, Nowhere just because the locals are proud about murdering two people for their traditions, most of them wouldn't even think twice before deciding not to press the button. I'm just getting a little tired of the "die in a fire" mentality of comments here. Usually I don't even pay attention to this sort of crap, I guess today I just woke up in more of a "let's forgive everybody and hug each other while singing kumbaya" mood than usual, and it's not meshing well with the "let's kill them all lolz" stuff.
On that note: I don't hate these people. What they did was wrong and they should be punished in some way, but I don't want to hurt them. I just wish I could somehow make them see that they killed two people for reasons that are ultimately trivial and stupid. I want people to be more reasonable and understanding towards each other. It'll never happen, of course, and in a way that's even more infuriating than this specific incident.
I was thinking something more along the lines of forcing everyone in the village to go through a few years of a professional counselling program. The people who actually committed the murders should do some hard jail time alongside that.
And here I am, taking comments seriously again. Maybe only getting 5 hours of sleep has something to do with it? I should probably just go play video games or something until this passes and I can say something like "haha yeah and we could make them all drink sewer water too!" without the hippy part of my brain going "that's not nice and you know it."
