[You think it's good to slaughter men whose religious beliefs differ from yours?]
It can be, if their beliefs are, for example, unrepentant Nazism or Islamofascism. As for killing their children, even that may be morally defensible. I know your reaction will be "you have GOT to be kidding," but I am not. More on that later, this is way too long. Note that the Isrealites were never ordered to rape.
Needless to say, the bible balances justice with mercy. I dare say we are sometimes too squeamish for what justice requires.

As much as I like most Christians, they'd be a lot easier to talk to if they'd actually bother to read their Bible.

But not Christian fascism? And what do you mean with 'unrepentant' Nazism? Nazism is a religious belief now?
Has nobody defined words like justice, mercy, wisdom and the like to these people?
...stupid question, I guess.
'Islamofascist?' You people are also sounding more and more like fascists.
Just in case you hadn't noticed, it's the 21st century now. You are a barbarian, and it is disgusting; I almost cannot stomach the fact that I have to share this planet with people like you.
As with all Christian fundementalism, any extreme is acceptable provided the proponant is not the one affected by it. It's real easy to sit there and pass judgment until it's your neck on the chopping block. But then again, we already knew this.
Why bother killing unrepentant Nazis when you could just invite those like-minded individuals for a beer and plot the destruction of every Muslim man, woman, and child on the planet?
That's what you'd really like; admit it.

Numbers 31.
The virgins of that chapter want a word with you.
Come to think of that, does anyone know a chapter in which god isn't a gargantuan dick, and is actually merciful?
Septic, that was actually a comment on her blog. I thought she handled the situation quite well when "debating" with him (I use scare quotes because it was really her trying to get him to explain himself, which he didn't).
Were the inhabitants of Jericho or Ai or Gideon or Hebron unrepentant Nazis or Islamo-fascists? What justice was shown by Joshua in his conquests? What mercy? The Israelites wanted the land, so they killed everybody* and took it.
Note that the Isrealites were never ordered to rape.
In Numbers, God instructs them about what to do when they conquer a city: "Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
"Keep alive [the virgins] for yourselves" sure sounds like rape to me.
* well, OK, "mercy" was shown to Rehab, but she was a traitor who helped Joshua's spies.
But, your position is pretty much the same as unrepentant nazis or islamofacists.
I think you just argued for you own death.
You understand neither justice nor mercy. Nor sanity, while we're at it.
I hereby rescind your claim to humanity. Yes, I do have the authority to do that.
<<Needless to say, the bible balances justice with mercy. I dare say we are sometimes too squeamish for what justice requires.>>
So you admit we are more merciful than your god?
Forcing a girl to marry her rapist is just and merciful? Isrealites were told to take the women that had 'never known a man' all the time.
Crap, read the fucking bible before you start babbling.
You have never read the Bible, haven't you?, what does it mean to keep virgin girls "for themselves?, are you telling me now that love is CONDITIONAL?

Now now, God didn't ORDER them to rape the women. He merely ALLOWED them to. Clearly, God was totally blameless here, at least in the eyes of a Fundie.
So the scenario goes somewhat like this?:
True Christian: Hey, we're gonna have to kill your kids because you don't believe in my imaginary friend whose mother was an engaged 14yo but God thought she was a perfect candidate for rape and then he was crucified and then he rose up to heaven but then he came back down again for a few days but then he went back up again and soon he's coming back down again to see who he's going to send to be eternally tortured.
Non-Christian: ................. Fine but you aren't allowed to rape them first.
True Christian: Deal
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
