[A Washington pastor responds to the controversial atheist sign at the Washington State Capitol's holiday display.]
The controversy over the anti-religion sign prompted Rev. Ken Hutcherson, pastor of the Antioch Bible Church in Kirkland, to post a pro-religion sign about 15 feet from where the atheist sign was located.
It reads: "There is one God. There is one Devil. There are angels, a heaven and hell. There is more than our natural world. Atheism is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."
The sign is a toned-down version of his first draft, which, according to Hutcherson, was to read, '"Hey, I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's OK because you're going to fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage on Judgment Day."'
"But that would be just as derogatory as the atheist sign," Hutcherson said.

[There is one God.]
Yeah, but which one???

"Yep. Islam is the way"
Yeah. It sounds to me like they're promoting Islam.
All will submit to Allah! The Quran is the only truth! Mohammed is the final prophet of Allah!
'"Hey, I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's OK because you're going to fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage on Judgment Day."'
Translation: Anyone who doubts God's infinite love will suffer eternal torment.
You should have stuck with your first instinct, Kenny. It's certainly more consistent with the bottom-line message of Christianity than what you eventually went with.
How can atheism be a myth? It's a belief that there are no gods. It's observed. It's documented. God, the Devil, angels, Heaven and Hell on the other hand are myths.
"Atheism is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds"
so instead of countering them, you just copy them?
'"Hey, I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's OK because you're going to fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage on Judgment Day."'
gotta love how he claims the atheist sign is derogatory, i mean its obviously much worse than saying you will burn in hell
fucking idiot
"But that would be just as derogatory as the atheist sign,"
LOLWUT? I'd say the poster that you put up is "just as derogatory" as the original. That is to say, not very.
Seriously? Does this guy think he's clever?
"Hey, I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's OK because you're going to fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage on Judgment Day."
That is pretty fundie...
Thank you, Ken Hutcherson!
Thank you!!!
I'm so happy that you decided to add your name to the list of arguments as to why your religious babble is nothing but a sad fantasy.
I guess you ended up as a priest as a result of flunking in every subject in school except for lies and hatred. Two basic requirements in order to become religious along with low IQ and a whiff of insanity. You have it all! Congratulations, moron!
What I don't get is why the hell did the organization have to put up such an inflammatory message in the first place?
The only thing this kind of message can do is incite harassment and antagonism towards non-believers of any type, and quite frankly I'd say we've already got more than enough of that already.
I give this whole debacle, and any and all fallout from it one MEGA FACEPALM!
"Hey, I believe in Jesus Christ and if you don't, that's OK because you're going to fry like a Jimmy Dean pure pork sausage on Judgment Day."
Actually, I kinda liked this one better.
I also think it would be much more efficient at driving people into the warm, welcoming arms of atheism than any number of 'God isn't real' signs.
Guess I'm kinda weird that way...
I wish he kept the original message in. I got a good laugh out of it.
Seriously, I hope that all this ruckus makes states and towns think twice about putting ANY religious symbols up next year.
I was about to say that neither sign should be allowed up there. Then I realized they have a nativity scene in the Capitol building. I mean, seriously? Someone should go slap a sign on baby Jebus that says "Treaty of Tripoli, bitch!"

... so, wait a minute, you just stole the wording from the Atheist sign and claimed that theirs is derogatory and yours isn't?
I was thinking the same thing. how does this make sense:
copy of atheist message < Jimmy Dean Sausages = atheist message
therefore
copy of atheist message < atheist message
fucking idiot.
Feel that Christian love, Jesus said to turn the other cheek-and you ignored him...
Besides, how is telling people to 'just be good' the same as threatening people with eternal torture?
"But that would be just as derogatory as the atheist sign," Hutcherson said.
And the current word for word ripoff is somehow not identical in tone? Your original draft would have been considerably more offensive, not equal.
"But that would be just as derogatory as the atheist sign,"
... you replaced atheism with Christianity and added statements of your beliefs to the front. Your sign is otherwise EXACTLY THE SAME. How is this less derogatory?
HOW??
It also makes no bloody sense. How is atheism mythical and superstitious?
For fuck's sake, if you're going to mimic your opponent's words to prove a point actually make sure it makes sense when reversed first.
There is NO God. There Is No Devil. There are no angels, not a heaven or hell. There is no more than the natural world. Christianity is but a myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds"
*fixed*
Seriously, Christians wonder why we don't like them. ITS BECAUSE YOU TWITS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT ACTUALLY CARE WE DONT SUCK ON JESUS' DICK!
"But that would be just as derogatory as the atheist sign," Hutcherson said.
Yeah, but a lot funnier ...
The original sign was funny (I laughed, and thought it was funny but pretty stupid to use as a tool for recruiting - 'hay gaiz pik us were 4th gradrrs!!!')
But the whole addition of the breakfast sausage part really throws off the rhyming meter, and that's annoying.
As derogatory? One asks people to be good, and the other tells people to beleive or they will suffer forever.
Don't compare, you twast.
Yuk. Jimmy Dean pure pork sausages are disgusting.
Oh, and that's just wonderful. Yeah, threaten us. That'll really scare us.
Oh, and I agree with Zimmer. If I lived there I'd totally put a "disregard that, I suck cocks" sign under the fundie sign. Just to get a reaction.
Which God though...?
I could with the context of that sign, argue that Zoroaster & Ahura Mazda respectively, are the God & Devil mentioned in said sign, & Zoroastranism predates Christanity, i.e Christianity stole the ideas from Zoroastranism, and if you replace Atheism, with Theism, in the last part of the sign, it makes more sense...
I was waiting for this to show up.
I've got no problem with both signs being displayed. In fact I think they should of left the Jimmy Dean one, that's way more truthful.
It's been commented on here, like, a million times before, but I am still amazed time and time again how much delight these people take in the idea of those who oppose them not only being proven wrong, but by suffering in agony forever, and ever, and ever. Sure, they're just showing us their "love" by "telling it like it is," but....seriously.
Frankly, I like your first idea better. Shows your true colors.
Does Washington expect you to pitch in for irony meters?
Kenny, the one you picked was "fairly derogatory".
In fairness, however, the atheist anti-religious placard was probably also "fairly derogatory". What's good for the goose....
To those saying the atheist sign was provocative: I live in a society where I can't go a day without some Christian crap - churches, demands for "donations", some asshole complaining that they don't get to make the rules, etc. Why should Christianity get a free pass, while everyone else has to shut up for fear of offending the Christians? If anything, atheist signs have been mild compared to some of the fundie shit out there.
What's good for the goose, indeed.
Derogatory? Nope. One side says something in a nice way, the other side says something in a dickish way. I am sorry, but atheists win (this round, anyway).
Atheism is just a lack of religion, it's not anti-religion any more than a person lacking a dog is necessarily anti-dogs.
The thinking for yourself and not taking things for granted hardens the heart and enslaves the mind? Huh?
Confused?
