It costs more than $30,000 for transgender therapy reassignment. That is very lowball figure. It takes approximately 6-1/2 years to complete. And then, 65% of the ones who have had the procedure change their minds.

This is not good for our military. If they want to have the procedure, they should pay for it. We taxpayers shouldn't have to, especially when it is a mental problem they have according to many doctors and should not be encouraged by change or mutilation of their bodies. They need to get to the bottom of what is bothering them. Most are just as unhappy afterwards as before.

Many suffer bi-polar and depression, anxiety, etc. People are not allowed into the military that have those problems because it is not safe for them, not safe for the ones with whom they serve.

By telling these people that it is okay to do this, they are being encouraged to do something that is actually bad for them...instead of being told, let's talk about what is really bothering you.

Bottom line -- taxpayers should not pay for this and it is not safe for them to be in the military.

6-1/2 years for this therapy -- and they can't serve during that time. So many join the service, get a cushy job and flaunt their high heels and in-your-face weirdness while we foot the bill. Worthless.

There is not a line of transfolk waiting to enlist to transition. You are delusional and lucky I'm not in charge. If it were up to me, the government would be completely paying for every trans person's transition.

It costs way more than $30K to treat cancer. Should we do genetic testing and keep those predisposed to cancer from enlisting? TRICARE also spends more on giving impotent men Viagra than is spent on transfolk. (Do you even know what TRICARE is??) And that's without considering other options that are covered for erectile dysfunction, such as shots and penile implants. Should we throw impotent men out of the military too? (Again, if it were up to me, we'd have a universal healthcare system that would cover this too, but something tells me you wouldn't object as much to that.)

A cushy job in the military? I've heard of those. Never seen one. 20 years in uniform, always subject to either being ordered into harms way because of my rate, or because they need bodies in the war zone and send people way, way out of their rate.

Do you remember Desert Storm? All those guys in uniform that were SHOCKED when we went to war, and they got called up? protesting that they enlisted for the education, not the shooting? Since then, the recruiters and boot camp make it REALLY clear that you're subject to being in a war zone.

Okay, how can they not serve while on hormone therapy? How can they not serve while seeing a psychiatrist (which, by the by, are offered to all members of the armed forces)? Do you really think that it takes them over half a decade to recover from surgery?

Also, if people aren't allowed into the armed forces with certain mental disorders, doesn't that mean that the people you claim have those disorders already aren't allowed in? Do you think they just magically develop bipolar disorder some point after enlistment (hint: no one does. It's a genetic chemical imbalance)? Are they somehow getting a pass on the mandatory psych eval?

sharaleigh23 either used to watch M*A*S*H and confused the guy in the dress trying to get himself kicked out of the army to avoid either dying or going over the despair event horizon in Korea for anything resembling gay and/or transgendered soldiers (and TV for real life in general) or is of the Trump school of thought on reality and facts are just things that don't really matter if you feel something is true.

And just in case your President manages to botch thanking you for your service in a few days then let me - even though I am a foreigner - thank you and all others who have enlisted on behalf of your country for the hardships, losses, and sacrifices you faced as soldiers. Whether out of patriotism or the simple promise of a better life you have put your lives on the line and in the hands of leaders you could only hope would not squander them. As every one of you must trust each other with your lives to return home safe there is no room for the petty adversarial politics, classism, and bigotry that consumes our civilian lives. Each loss on the field is the loss of someone you trusted, someone as close as family. Or at least that is the ideal. But whatever your reasons, whatever your ideals, we cannot forget what you are expected to give in the line of duty. What those who came before you have already given.

And so I thank you for your service and courage.

At this rate our countries may well end up on opposite sides in a war over an idiot's Twitter tantrums but I'm still going to honour what it means to be a soldier.
