If there were not a real God, there would be no reason to have counterfeits.

What a preposterously inane comment! The only difference between a deist and an atheist is that the atheist believes in one less god than the deist. ALL of the deities proposed so far have had EQUAL proof of their existence: NONE.
The closest thing to a "counterfeit" god that I can imagine qualifying for the term is one deliberately and entirely made up by someone (such as, say, a mediocre sci-fi writer), like a fictional character, then foolishly worshipped by others who find belief in the concept irresistable.

I don't know. That doesn't jive with my understanding of the word 'counterfeit.' As I understand it, a counterfeit is a fraudulent copy of something genuine. To use the word is to assume that a genuine exists. (And I would think that this is what rhutchin was trying to sneak in the back door.)
Amos, that's why I said it was "the closest thing to a 'counterfeit' god" that I could think of -- that since the truth of the matter is an entirely moot point, being beyond the possibility of proof or disproof, the only thing that can be counterfeited is belief, but someone else can then take on that belief as real (like people who have decided that The Force is real, even though it was clearly created strictly as a fictional phenomenon, or people who have fallen for Dianetics and Scientology, even though they were just created by L. Ron Hubbard as a way to bilk people for a fortune, tax-free).

Since your God (Of the Bible) is one of the more recent and an proven almagram of earlier ones,,,you might want to rethink your train ( Logical trainwreck)of thought.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster might be what could be construed as a counterfeit god.
IF there were one real god and lots of counterfeits, the oldest one ought to be the real one, right? You can't counterfeit what's not created yet. That means some Hindu god or ancient Chinese god is the real one.
With me so far, rhutchin? Hello? Hello...?
“If there were not a real God, there would be no reason to have counterfeits.”
Bullshit. Human tendency is to assign agency. SOMEONE causes the rain, the lightning, the floods, the earthquakes. Human imagination gives them personalities and relationships, histories and desires.
We dressed up the inexplicable to make it more accessible. Not correctly, but easier to manage.
No need at all for any gods to exist to explain ALL examples created so far.
Confused?
