[After someone says that his logic applies to old spy novels as well] OK James Bond is made up fiction but I just wondered, if God did not exist, what would possess people say He does, let alone worship Him.

Bond movies rake in a lot of cash from people who want to suspend their reason for a few hours and indulge in pleasant fantasy. That's very different from religion because, uhm, because, er, well it just is!
That's a lot of gold.

I get it.
From what I see this guy maybe suggested we all believe in James Bond too. No. But he's so much more likely, thats an important and relevant point.
We may love James Bond, Be extreme fans of the books or the movies, have symbols, pictures, dvds or books around the house but we don't pray to him or expect him to save us.
There's even evidence of Bond being based upon real agents, admitted by the author. Some of the fan base are fanatical about James Bond but NONE PRAY TO HIM for salvation.
Hmm... the teenage daughter of a friend is completely possessed with a Boy Band now. Typical hysterical fan-girl. Her behaviour can be even called "worship".
And this Boy Band at least does exist, contrary to "God".
When people worship some deity or similiar, this does not prove the existence of god at all. But it says very much about human psychology.

Does that answer your question?
So, that means that all gods and goddesses exist, right? After all, what would possess people to say Zeus, Shiva, Quetzalcoatl, Thor, Gaia, etc, exist, let alone worship Them?
Because Humans are pathetic creatures incapable of living their lives without looking up to a greater power. As long as Humanity exists, they shall seek a higher being to kneel before and to seek salvation from. As long as that desire exists, so shall I.
Confused?
