There is a woman in my playgroup who frequently cooks for the rest of us while our kids play together. Last week, she made these really yummy Indian "dosas" (crepes) with some kind of mango sauce. Anyway, today she was explaining another Indian recipe to some other women (she's not Indian, BTW). It sounded great, so I asked her where she gets all these recipes. She told me she studies Ayurvedic cooking. I knew that was a Hindu term, but I wasn't sure what it meant, and there was no time to get into it (my little guy was tired and ready to go home). I found a website explaining it here: http://www.sanatansociety.org/indian ...ic_cooking.htm
This practice is deeply rooted in Hinduism, and the cooking of this type of food is a means of worship.
My question/dilemma is, should I now avoid this food since I know that it is essentially a sacrifice to idols? It would be easy to pass on the food (it wouldn't make a scene) but I'm not sure if it is necessary. I almost feel like I shouldn't touch it since I know what is behind it, KWIM?
I'd love some feedback on this
BTW, this woman also is very into Eckhart Tolle's book. So I know that she takes this stuff seriously.

Just to be safe, you should avoid all food. You never know, someone might have dedicated it to an idol. Best avoid bathing too, since soap might be a sacrificial offering in some weird religion. And demons move through the air, right? If you want to be right with Jebus, quit breathing. Better safe than sorry (at least for the rest of us).
So you have been eating it so far and you have been fine right? You haven't had the urge to become a Hindu right?
Eat the food and be a normal person.
Okay I feel stupid today since this is another question I have to ask. What the hell is KWIM?
Sanatan society?
OHH NOESS!!!1!!22#$4%$ The same letters as <u kno who>
I bet they wear <satin> clothes, even@21!!! and u know what THAT means
You're just looking for an excuse to be a douchebag.
"Apparently, Fundamentalist Christians don't have an original cuisine(which may explain why they are the demographic with the highest obesity rate in the country)."
Bwahahaha! So true.
Didn't Paul have a discussion about Christians eating meat that had been offered to idols? I believe he said that there was nothing wrong with eating that meat, unless it offended another Christian...
I'd go ahead and eat the food. But FaithContender is probably afraid that it will put some kind of hex on her if she eats it.......
I remember a story of someone trying to set JC up by asking him if it was OK to eat pork. He said something like, "It's not what goes into you, but what comes out of you." It's more important how you treat others, and you're content to treat this woman like crap because of your foolish biases. You hate Jesus! Ooohhh, is he going to be PISSED!
You didn't mention any idols in the playgroup, so what's your problem? When my parents were starving and food was unobtainable, they would have been glad to have anything to eat. So myu attitude to you is this: die of starvation and there will be one less ungrateful mouth to feed.
From where I sit, FC and her friend are both equally batty. That said, FC probably considers Taste of Home and Sandra Lee the height of home cooking and should really avail herself of the chance to try any other food she's offered. Fuck that "sacrificed to idols" shit; it's rude to turn down hospitality.
Yes. Yes, it's fucking false idol food. If you eat it, Satan will burst out of your fucking chest and rape your eyes.
Honestly, every time I think you people can't drop onto a new, undiscovered low level of pathetic-and-undeserving-of-life, you manage to somehow find one and occupy it utterly.
You know what? You just know fucking what? That air you're breathing now? That air has been shared by non-believers too! Oh fucking fuck, how can you stand it? Imagine, the awful fucking sin of sharing and tasting of the air of heathens, polluting your souls with it! Quick, stop fucking breathing already, and do yourselves and the rest of us a cunting favour already.

Yes, in Corinthians Paul stated it was ok to eat food sacrificed to idols, because as their gods didn't exist, it didn't mean anything.
Just more proof that fundies don't read their Bible.
So you can't eat ethnic food, can't eat McDonalds.
Just go scarf your Burger king and die already. At least we know your kids probably won't breed. Type 2 diabetes can cause infertility.
Since you people claim to have powers straight from the Holy Spirit, why don't you just speak in tongues over the cake, forcing the unholy deeeemons of Hinduism out, and then you can safely eat it?
Shintos put rice out for their gods. Never eat rice. Ever.
Or meat for that matter, as it was a common practice to sacrifice a cow or pig or some such to the Greek gods.
Ya know what? Just to be safe, don't eat anything ever again, as anything edible could be used in some religion somewhere as a form of sacrifice to their gods.
yes avoid everything prepared or built by people who aren't true Xians (TM).
Also avoid any and all services provided by such, especially medical treatment provided by atheists and all drugs invented and developed by them.
Remember your body is god's temple and your lifestyle your testament and witness to your true Xian (TM) faith.
God WILL provide as he sees fit, so if your "little" guy dies from something easily curable with "godless" drugs or treatment, that is god's will.
Have a nice 15C life
Well now, lady, I think I may have a solution for you! Carry some holy water around wherever you go, and if food smells Satanic to you, give it a sprinkle! Now it's safe for Christian consumption :)
Seriously now, if the historical origins of a food is what bothers you, I suggest you take a good look at your own culture's dishes. I'm sure you'll find some disturbing truths.
Sadly these people do take this shit seriously. My coworker had a fundie neighbor refused to eat Chinese food, which is hugely popular here in KC, because of their "weird" beliefs.
It's a wonder any of these people survive to adulthood.
Well, you have two options.
One, you can enjoy the food she cooks, politely tell her you don't share her religion if the subject ever comes up, and then try to steer the conversation into pleasant, neutral areas. And who knows, you might actually learn something about cooking or food that you may find useful.
Or...
Two, you can refuse to eat her cooking and avoid all contact with her, period. If that requires you to find another play group for your children, then that's just the way it is. She'll figure out very fast that you're not a particularly nice person if you do, but if you're the sort of person who would seriously consider refusing to eat a meal someone cooked for you simply because they're of a different faith, then I doubt you'd care much about what they think of you.
Or maybe cooking this type of food is a means of, I don't know, feeding people? Even stupid, rude and bigoted fundie imbeciles, who perhaps should fucking starve themselves and leave the rest of us alone.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
