Female rape victim gets 200 lashes and jail
A COURT in the ultra-conservative Islamic kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail.
The 19-year-old woman - whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms - was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for "being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape,'' the Arab News reported.
But in a new verdict issued after Saudi Arabia's Higher Judicial Council ordered a retrial, the court in the eastern town of Al-Qatif more than doubled the number of lashes to 200.

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth. I just... how can any humane person think this is okay? What goes through a person's mind to make them think "hey, 200 lashes for a woman who's been beaten, raped and horribly traumatised! that's a great idea!" There's no way I can wrap my head around it. I swear, you'd have to have no soul or conscience to be capable of enacting something like this.
That poor woman. I almost hope the 200 lashes punishment DOES kill her, to put her out of her life's insane misery -- I can't imagine her ever getting over this as it is. It would also show more clearly just how extreme that punishment is.
And I just know that my government won't even give the Saudis so much as a stern glance of disapproval over this -- much to my shame.
I wonder, how do they justify all this absurd reasoning for a sentence?, she's the victim but she's punished for what?, for being with an unrelated man?, what if she wasn't there because she wants to?
These are not men. These are not even human beings. These are monsters. I wonder how they would feel if they had to undergo the same trauma that this poor woman is now forced to face.

To be semi-fair here, we should note that her rapists WERE duly convicted and sent to jail.
Her sentence of 200 lashes and jail time was for the crime of being out in public without being accompanied by a male relative. It is not AT ALL clear whether this was because she was dragged into the car and raped there, or because she was out in public without a male relative to begin with.
I'm not one for invading other countries...
But this kind of thing just shouldn't be allowed. We have a responsibility, as human beings, to protect others from attrocities like this.
Ironic, isn't it. We invade Iraq, ostensibly to "liberate" its citizens (once it was evident that there were no WMDs there), yet we count Saudi Arabia as one of our allies.

Oh well, we cannot all be in the 21st century at the same time....some entire countries are still in the 7th. Saudi Arabia defines the concept of "backward"!
She was punished for a crime (of which she was later amnestied) she committed: Being a victim of a crime does not remove one from responsibility of following the (culturally biased) law of the land.
This would be something akin to having a woman who first robbed a bank and was later raped go free without any robbery charge.
FYI the man with whom she was with in the car at the time was ALSO sentenced (and not amnestied) for the crime *they* committed BEFORE she was raped.
Naturally, the people who raped the woman also got sentenced.
So basically, the Wahabbis are saying kill the woman for being raped.

So let me get this straight, she is kidnapped and raped, and SHE gets punished?! For getting kidnapped?!
... and one day they will run out of victims/women if they continue like this...
... hopefully that will happen after they run out of oil so they couldn't have the cash reserve to import foreign women.

How noble of you, to want to send someone else's son/daughter to die on foreign soil to uphold your morals. Here is a better idea: convince the American government, elected by the American people, to release its greed-driven stranglehold on this region's natural social evolution. See? You don't even need anyone to leave your national borders, and problems like this, and many others perhaps even worse than this that never even get reported, would -naturally- go away. They went away from western societies (mostly), why assume those brown people are any less capable of achieving social enlightenment? Alternatively, you could continue sacrificing third world "lowlifes" to your god of capitalism, and let your grandchildren deal with the stigma of the consequences when the bough finally breaks. Considering the behavioral patterns of past empires, I guess we all know which one it's ultimately going to be.
