[In response to JK Rowling's announcement that Albus Dumbledore was gay]
this is a terrible shame. What seemed like a wholesome book, ruined. What was highly touted among biblical christians as "christian" is nothign more than mordern day garbage. Our 3 copies are headed for the trash.

"What seemed like a wholesome book, ruined"
This the funniest thing I've ever read from these fundies, wasn't Harry Potter gonna go to hell or something?
This sort of thing makes me think that some people really are stupid. Let's get real for a moment. The character in a book is an IT. IT does as the author allows IT to do. It has no life of ITs own, makes no decision and thinks only the author's thoughts. IT is not going to jump into my bed, molest me in the gents lavatory, ogle me, make lewd suggestions. IT can't.
Moreover, in the case of the Harry Potter books, whether IT is gay or not is meaningless unless the matter is germane to the plot. I don't believe in this case it is.
But already the fundie right is getting its holy knickers in a twist.
If it weren't so mindless and so stupid a thing for an adult to do, I'd be laughing at the idiot who is going to throw out the books.
Prattish behaviour, pure and simple.
I'm with GigaGuess.
I'm thinking, now that the series is complete, Ms Rowling can indulge in some entertaining mindfuckery...we all know there are plenty people gullible enough to sign up for a sociological study of strangeness.
I think Rowling created characters like the Malfoys, the Dursleys, Umbridge, and Fudge specifically to make fun of people like this.
But then one of the strongest opponents of it became one the strongest proponents of it after actually reading it. His claim was that, while the characters do engage in witch-craft, none of it is expressly satanic, and the themes of good v. evil that appear in C.S. Lewis's work also appear in HP. Ultimately, it upholds Xian values and morals. Just... the characters have supernatural ability.
I should add that there have been people ranting themselves blue about it from day one who didn't really give a damn about this. Because it was written in a book, and I'm pretty sure they're illiterate.
I still love, though, the belief that they are going to take 3 paid for books, and throw them in the trash, and that's supposed to affect Ms. Rowling.
Oh for the love of pete.
It doesn't take much to send fundies into a frenzy, does it? This guy's going to trash 3 books because the author "thought" of Dumbledore as gay?
I suspect that JK Rowling was inundated by a lot of "witchcraft is of teh debbil" correspondence and decided to get some of her own digs in.
is revealing an aspect of a character never even alluded to in any of the 7 books really anything!? She could say Dumbledore was actually purple if she wanted to. Who cares!?
I'm also loving that HP somehow became a stronghold of Christianity (when!?) but has no faultered because the author says one of the characters was gay even though she never hinted at it even slightly before. It wasn't even the Jesus character that was gay!
So let me get this straight: You thought Dumbledore was a good person with Christian values until you found out he was gay?
Okay, especially because it's a fictitious book, that's EXTREMELY homophobic. I think the message here is "Gays are just like you & I, & therefore not evil," but apparently you're too much of a Fundie to grasp that.
Other than that, I second everything else said here.
Well, nice one JKR! I'm not a particular fan of her books, but she always struck me as a nice lady. Seems she has a wicked sense of humour, too.
EDIT: and I would totally do her (she's rich, good-looking, intelligent ...), except she smokes like a factory chimney. Heigh ho.
Rowling is a marketing genius. Her books were launched into national acclaim largely because of the fundie hubub about witchcraft and occultism. My guess is that she's simply playing her hand to create another fundie outrage that will, in turn, sell more books. Nothing sells like a little controversy, you know :-)
Great idea, keithbrown! You know what else you should do? Run out to your local Borders and buy out every single Harry Potter book - every single godless one - and throw them ALL in the trash! Then head to Barnes and Noble, and then spend a few years hunting down all you can on Amazon.com! Those royalties sure will show Ms. Rowling that homosexuality is a sin!
There is something that doesn't seem to fit... He keeps talking about Harry potter as if it was a single book, instead of a series. Although I may be reading too much into it, I think he never read the books and just acts like an offended fan.
"A wholesome book."
Wholesome? Loads of people die in those books! Then again...Christians have never had much of a problem with killing people. Look at me, I'm a Christian! Murder is negotiable, but homosexuality is unacceptable under any circumstances!
Ugh, when I rule the world, people like you are going to be the first ones I make sure and remove from the gene pool.
Harry Potter was never touted as Christian among "biblical" Christians (i.e. fundies). It was touted as satanic.
Broaden your mind, Keith. It might make you a bit happier.
shriekback said I think Rowling created characters like the Malfoys, the Dursleys, Umbridge, and Fudge specifically to make fun of people like this.
She did; she's often said the books have a message about hate and bigotry and tolerance, etc.
keithbrown, it's funny--the books are about witchcraft and the occult, but you don't have a problem with it until the gay character was outed? Fucked up.
You know, If I were to start believing in magic, zombies and invisable people, I would choose to believe in Harry Potty (gay Dumbly and all) instead of Christian teachings. There is no hate or guilt involved and I don't think anyone is killing JK Rowlings name.....
They made Dumbledore gay? that must have been a funny desicion:
"Mrs. Rowling, theirs abunch of angry fundies here about your book"
"why would anyone be mad at a childrens book!"
"I dont know, they keep babbling about witchcraft"
"well lets piss'em off some more why dont we..."
Typical. Treat a person with respect and dignity as long as you think he's straight. Then when you find out he's gay, he suddenly becomes the scum of the earth.
Seriously. Dumbledore hasn't changed at all, YOU'RE just making a big over something he never bothered to tell you because in the grand scheme of things its not that important.
A "wholesome book". You mean like the Old Testament? Lots of wholesome christian stories for children in that book you know. Wholesome stories including murder, genocide, rape, incest, hate, jealousy, and slavery. Where else will they learn how to be a "jealous, petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully"?
-Apologies to Richard Dawkins.
Yes for shame that JK Rowling include a gay character in her books. For shame she took a stand for progress and LGBT rights, and I respect her all the more it.
Also? Dumbledore's homosexuality isn't blatant in the books and can easily be ignored or reframed.
You also support the Bible.
Harry Potter has a lot more moral lessons than the Old Testament.

Those Mad Mullahs' hadn't actually read Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses" that they burned.
Yet, like he & his publishers, JK Rowling & Bloomsbury still have your money , keithbrowntrousers.
...and if you think "HP" is 'Christian', /b]then you 'Biblical Christians' have never actually read your Bibles : Exodus 22:18 (Q JV, Jerry!): 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'. Where Harry & co., including the likes of Hermione Granger, went to learn their craft. What was it's full name...?!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
