The thing that really annoys me about people who say this, even jokingly, is that they always imply that its the other people God is pissed off at, not they themselves. A tornado takes out a conservative Christian town in the bible belt, and it's just a natural disaster. Or, it's never an admonition to stop being intolerant, bigoted assholes, it's seen as a sign to be even more intolerant and bigoted.

This "God is punishing us with natural disasters" is no different from ancient superstitious tribes who kept doing dances to please the gods so that they'd have a good harvest that year. If they didn't have a good harvest, then they believed they weren't pleasing the gods well enough, even though they did the same dance year after year. The only difference is that in the 21st century America, we should be above this kind of stupid superstition, and certainly shouldn't vote for any politician who promotes the idea.

That, I think, is the most ridiculous part. Every time you have a natural disaster, you have some crazy fundie say that it's punishment for the people's immorality. "There's fires in California because you don't stone gay people on sight!" Completely bonkers, but there's at least a perverse sort of logic that is internally consistent.

How often did God punish overspending in the Bible? Zero times. You could literally replace "overspending" with pretty much anything and it would make just as much sense:

"Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They want new hybrid cars that run on gasoline and baby oil and we've got to provide it."

Googling around, I see absolutely no mention of Batscat Shelly making statements relating to the wildfires in Texas right now (except re. Rick Perry; scoring political points, as far as his candidacy is concerned).

Going by your logic then, Shelly, I'd have to say - as an Atheist - that what's happening in Texas points to one of two conclusions:

1- God is punishing Texas for being a backward, subhuman, fundie state, and is impressing upon it's inhabitants that it should instead be a forward-looking, progressive, Atheist state.

2- Shit happens. And your so-called 'God' doesn't exist.
