Let's examine this more closely...
Think about it. What does God say?
Absolutely nothing. He doesn't exist.
Is it ok to divorce because of spouse abuse?
Yes. It is, in fact, recommended.
Is it ok to divorce because of child abuse?
Yes. It is, in fact, recommended.
Is it ok to divorce because of money spending issues?
Yes. It can, in fact, be necessary.
Is it ok to divorce because of mental health reasons?
Yes. It can, in fact, be necessary.
No.
Pardon me?
The only time God said yes, ok, divorce, is in the case of adultery.
So if my spouse beats me every day with a whip, I can't divorce; if they break our child's arm once a month, I can't divorce; if they spend so much money we can't afford to pay morgage or taxes, I can't divorce; if they are autistic, depressed, bipolar, or sociopathic, and I can't deal with the stress anymore, I can't divorce; but if they hire a prostitute I can see a lawyer? Asshat.
But even then, what does God say about others sinning against us? We're supposed to forgive the offender 70 x 7 times.
...Eh? Where'd the "70 x 7" come from? And why give it as a mathmatical expression?
If a person has actually forgiven another person 490 times for something, and you really consider what Jesus did on the cross, then our forgiveness of others has only just barely scratched the surface of what Jesus did.
...Well this makes a great deal of sense. [/sarcasm]
If you think about it, banning divorce isn't at all against God's revealed will for us in the Bible.
Wouldn't it go against the free will bit?
God's plan is one man for one woman, till death do they part, regardless of the details between marriage and death.
Yeah, but, y'know, that's kinda old. Nobody does that anymore.
In his graciousness to us, he has provided an out via adultery, should we choose to take it; however, even that isn't what he really desires for us.
Isn't adultery a sin, though? Trade one sin for another? Man your god's an ass.
As an interesting end note...My mom has several Christian friends and a few atheist friends. All of her Christian friends have been or are divorced. All her atheist friends are in healthy, happy marriages that look like they'll last for years to come. Just something for you to think about.
