Glen Urquhart: “Do you know, where does this phrase ’separation of church and state’ come from? Anybody know?”
Audience member: “From the Devil.”
History teacher: “I do.”
Glen Urquhart (Pointing to audience member and laughing) : “But I told you.”
History teacher: “No. I know. But I’m the history teacher. It was a letter.”
Glen Urquhart: “That is, actually, that exact phrase is not in Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists. He was reassuring them the federal government wouldn’t trample on their religion. The exact phrase ’separation of Church and State’ came out of Adolph Hitler’s mouth. That’s where it comes from. So the next time your liberal friends talk about the separation of Church and State, ask them why they’re Nazis.”

So Glen Urquhart is a liar.
Hitler himself insisted that the state and church must work together, and must not be seperated at all.
The phrase comes from the rationalist teachings of late 18th century philosophers, and idealists such as Jefferson.
"...that exact phrase is not in Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists." - Glen Urquhart
"...I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." - Thomas Jefferson
Quite right Mr, Urquart, the words is 'between', not 'of'. Now, perhaps you could provide the quote from Hitler.
Even if we assume you're right, Hitler also enjoyed watercolor painting, strongly opposed animal cruelty, and was an oxygen-breathing carbon-based lifeform. Your point?
The next time your fundie friends talk about Hitler enforcing the separation of church and state, ask them why they are morons.
(I'd hazard to guess it's because they've been listening to Glen Urquhart proselytizing).
So, Nazis believed in separation of Church and State, and absolutely did nothing that compromised the ability of any religious groups to practice their religion. Is that what you're saying? 'Cause as I remember, they may have had some beefs with some religious groups...
Hitler was also a non-smoker. Everyone needs to start puffing away so we won't be like the Nazis!
The sad part is that his audience will eat that up. Not only will they not question his claim, but they will repeat it as fact.
That's not actually true. Not that you give a shot what's true, considering you live in a fact-free fantasyland.
@Brendan Rizzo
Holy Jesus fuck. Show this to most Americans and they'll balk in horror or dismiss it as the ranting of crazies. Stop painting us in such a broad brush, you boomerang bigot. Also, your Iran analogy= retarded.
Read and weep Urquhart .
And about your claim about Hitler and this separation, I can't to seem to find any source other than right-wing outrageous claims. Even if so, Hitler also stated before that he was doing the Lord's work by killing the Jews. In addition, Nazi belt buckles contained 'Gott Mit Uns' or 'God with us'.
You seem to support the idea of a theocracy, or religious fascism. Even forgetting all that, you seem to have a childish way of dealing with people who appropriately disagree with you. May I ask of you, Glen, why are you a Nazi?
Jefferson said "wall of separation between church and state."
I guess it's a totally different quote without the word wall. Then again, recent fundie actions have basically been taking a battering ram to that wall, so maybe it's more fitting to say separation by itself now. Like church and state aren't DIVORCED, they're just living in different houses while they think about it.
...I like Jefferson's quote better.
Glen Urquhart: “Do you know, where does this phrase ’separation of church and state’ come from? Anybody know?”
Audience member: I do. I'm a history tea...
Glen Urquhart HITLER!!! That's who. Satan himself!!! He went in the way back machine and forged, FORGED, I tell you . Jefferson's letter. God agrees. QED. Next?
"So the next time your liberal friends talk about the separation of Church and State, ask them why they’re Nazis.”"
And what would be the point of asking such a stupid question? Except to waste time and make everyone realise what an idiot you really are.
Hitler's Germany had this treaty , the "Imperial Concordance", with the Vatican. It's still on the books in Germany to this day.
The US can never have such a treaty, simply because we have a broad reaching seperation of church and state on all levels.
The exact phrase, "Pass the salt," came out of Hitler's mouth. That's where it came from. So the next time your dinner guests say, "Pass the salt," tell them they're Nazis.
Well, Hitler spoke GERMAN - so, if the words 'between' and 'of' make such a difference, what about speaking in a different language?
"Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's" Matthew 22:21
Therefore, Jesus is Hitler?
@ Old Viking
... And if he hadn't lived fundies would be mute.
*sigh* So their mouthiness is largely because of him, figures.
Leave it to Hitler.
Hey, that might make a cool TV program.
Nah, I guess not.
@ Brendan Rizzo:
Yes, I know that all of America should be razed to the ground, but wouldn't that be doing whatever the fundies want to do? He who fights monsters, indeed...
What a fucking moron. Separation of church and state PROTECTS FREEDOM OF RELIGION.
Tea Party fascists, why do you hate the first amendment?
How typical that Christians would not own up to the monster they created. They will say anything to cover up the foul, barbaric, depraved, bloodthirsty, lying creatures they are.
Hitler was a time traveller? Dear Flying Spaghetti Monster, he could have spread even more evil!
You, Glen, on the other hand, need to listen to the History teacher more closely.
Glen, you're filthy fucking liar.
Also, Godwin? Really?
You fundies are about as original as a bag of sand in your arguments...
@Brendan Rizzo
Not everyone dismisses rationality. There is a growing movement in the U.S. that embraces rationality and free thought. However, your hyperbole seems to more and more reflect a disrespect for the truth.
"There is no difference between us and Iran."
Really? Have you been to Iran lately? There is drastic difference between the U.S. and Iran.
@ Brendan Rizzo
This is why America cannot change. Hatred of rationality is hard-wired into the culture. There is no difference between us and Iran.
You know - I am a pretty laid-back, low key kind of fellow who feels everyone should enjoy their Freedom of Speech.
That said - speak for you own damn self, you whiny little bitch. I am sick and tired of seeing this Anti-American bullshite in almost every one of your posts.
You've said before you were going to leave - then fucking go already! Don't let the door hit you in the ass.
Are you a sock-puppet for Headache?
I guess that means that when the GOP steals the next election for Mormon Mitt, as they're going to do with the voter suppression laws they're imposing all over the country, Glen will be just fine with Mitt decreeing that everyone must wear Magic Underwear and pay ten percent of their income to the Mormon cult.
@ michael3ov
Actually, I was thinking RSTDT.
@ Wyzard
Either he's Headache, or he's another loser, frustrated by life in his fundie mother's basement.
I'm just going to call Brendan "Headache 2.0"
Remember the junk 'Headache' used to say?
Remember how 'Brendan' used to DEFEND the USA from idiots like 'Headache'?
Notice how once 'Brendan' made his Face/Heel turn to 'Headache 2.0' that 'Headache' hasn't been heard from since?
'BRENDAN RIZZO/HEADACHE' IS ONE-AND-THE-SAME! An elaborate & VERY dedicated sock-puppeting troll! First, he comes as 'Headache' & does his thing, then he appears as 'Brendan Rizzo' to "side" with us & yell at 'Headache' (arguing with himself). Then 'Brendan' turns into 'Headache 2.0' and annoys and baffles us. 'Brendan Headache' IS A BIG-ASS HAIRY TROLL!
I'd say we cease calling him 'Brendan Rizzo' and start calling him, 'Brendan Headache', 'Trollin' Rizzo' 'Son Of Headache', 'Headache Jr.' or 'Headache 2.0'. Treat him like we do 'His4Life/Troll4Life' or like we did with that 'TheAmericanCowboy' guy.
(Sorry for the capitals, I don't know how to use italics, here).
@michael3ov
I agree. He's rapidly degenerating into a radical leftist. As in, an ACTUAL radical leftist, not what Republicans call "radical leftists". He's like a Liberal version of your crazy Fox-news-watching Uncle Jim, and just as annoying.
@SpukiKitty
Excuse me, that revelation was so utterly terrifying I have to go fetch my tinfoil hat.
^
O.O
I liked "Son of Headache", myself.
This Urquhart fucker is running for office?! So glad to not be American right now...
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
