The extremist, carrying an assault rifle, shows the camera the badges on the uniforms of his prisoners. He then grabs them one after the other by the hair and makes them repeat the Isis slogan ‘Baqiya’, which is thought to mean "(Isis) will remain in existence" or "Islamic state will stay".

One of the men, a corporal, appears to be more reluctant than the others to repeat the slogan, and has to be ordered several times to say the word before he obeys.

Off camera, the corporal’s tormentor forces him to lie on the ground and shoots him.

The video then shows the militant gloating over what he has done, and holding the dead man's identity card up to the camera.

He asks a captured soldier sitting beside the dead body: “This dog I killed, where is he from?

Told that the man he killed was a Shia from Sinjar, in northern Iraq, he says: “He is a Shia, praise to Allah, the lord of the universe!

“Praise to Allah, whether he is a believer or not, I killed him. I killed a Shia! I killed a Shia!”

What part of "this could be us if we let it and it's fucking scary" actually excuses what we're obviously acknowledging is sickening?

Drawing parallels to an existant, persistant, and agressive attitude attempting to assert itself in North America and institute a system where punishment for not pledging allegience to a specific flag or cross becomes the norm isn't excusing Islamic extremism or damning the non-insane segments of Christianity, it's pointing out that for some people the only thing they see wrong with this scenario is who gets to pull the trigger and who gets to die for their beliefs.

Completely missing the point is a pretty good indicator that you're one such person.

For all the fear mongering that atheists are going to come around and force people to renounce their faith on pain of death or imprisonment, current rhetoric and historical precedent indicates it's far more likely that Christians will be doing it to other Christians just as these Muslims did to their fellow Muslims less out of faith and more due to political agendas dressed up as faith.

I honestly fought back breaking down crying when I posted this and I don't think I was able to. The Shia have been shat on all these years and now they are just slaughtering them just for the crime of existing. The Shia lead government has much to answer for for it's abuse of Sunnis but I can tell you the typical Shia; not the government of Iran, not Hezbollah, but the men, women and children who make up the Shia minorities all over the world just want to not live in a world where they are not genocide for their faith. The fact that I as a pacifist am morally conflicted about what the fuck should we should do, and if we do something, would it just be for the worst? @#1678129 says it all.

The Islamophobia in this thread makes me heartbroken. Do these people deserve to die because they believe? I am not saying "Criticism" by that word, I mean "Laughing as Iraq burns"

Quit being obtuse. I'm not talking about petty, unconstitutional discrimination that people take upon themselves to go beyond any actual religious edict to shun and torment people they think unworthy.

I'm talking about this, and this, and by extension forced oaths like these with calls to return to McCarthy era witch hunts that inject religion into as much of the national identity as possible. They aren't one off whackadoos either, it's a pretty common theme and even a major political platform.

You remember the McCarthy era? Stalin wasn't the only Joe with a habit of trampling constitutional rights and making people disappear. Those quotes I linked were made by people in government right now calling for returns to those practices despite there being an example right here in your face of what happens when enforced adherence to any ideology - religious or political - trumps human rights. That's what I'm talking about.

Loyalty before liberty, does that sound like a country you recognize? Loyalty to the Church? Loyalty to the State? Loyalty to the state-sponsored church before you have any legal rights that get overridden the moment the leaders interperet them differently? Like communist China? pre-invasion Afghanistan? How about a society that runs on a strict caste system? Obey or be branded traitor, heretic, or worse.

Somebody's got to look out for your freedom chuckles, and the religious right's attempts to gift wrap those freedoms for an easily abused absolute authority doesn't make the job very easy. But looking out for your rights also includes looking out for everyone else's.
