[In Response to a report that almost half of black gay teenagers have contemplated suicide.]
This is sad, and totally unnecessary. It is sad that living a gay lifestyle is more important to them than being alive. If you want to reduce suicide, promote asexualism as a viable and healthy alternative and teach all children to keep their sexuality to themselves until they are 18. First, you do not have to choose gay behavior nor act on gay impulses. If you cannot control your behavior and passions, then maybe evolution should take you out. And even if you choose this lifestyle, then you should keep it to yourself and never mention it. You cannot be attacked over something others don't know about you. If I was different in some way, I'd do whatever it takes to keep that to myself so there won't be consequences from others. If I were to advertise my difference and wear it on my sleeve, I'd be asking for whatever mistreatment I get.

Ah. I see my own mistake. I shouldn't have lived a short lifestyle. I should have kept my (lack of height) to myself, at least till I was eighteen. I should have chosen an asizeual mode of life, and if I couldn't conceal that I was short, evolution should have taken me out. Yeah, that's fair.
"promote asexualism as a viable and healthy alternative and teach all children to keep their sexuality to themselves until they are 18."
Yes because that has worked so well up to now.
I'll make a deal with you: I'll keep my sexuality to myself if you'll keep your religion to yourself.
So sayeth those who wish that Galileo, Newton, Darwin, and Einstein had just kept their differences to themselves. Why? Because they are too effing stupid and/or crazy to understand the cause and effect universe inhabited by sane people.
"If I was different in some way, I'd do whatever it takes to keep that to myself so there won't be consequences from others."
- And what gives you the right to make such a decision for everyone else?
"If I were to advertise my difference and wear it on my sleeve, I'd be asking for whatever mistreatment I get."
- You've never quite grasped the concept of empathy, have you Fuchsia?

Oh, I get it, so every one who is gay-bashed, or beaten up for being a goth or supporting a different team, or being black or chinese or for liking different music is to blame, not the moron doing the beating. It all makes so much sense now.
If pricks like you didn't make such a massive deal about people who are gay, then maybe their lives would be a bit happier and they wouldn't end up contemplating suicide as a viable alternative to having their hopes and dreams trashed by bigots who can't see past their own hateful ignorance.
Presumably you want asexuality taught to all young people, not just the gay ones. Sure that'll work well.
Idiot.
I'm asexual. Being asexual is not the same thing as being *celibate* which what this person is trying to advocate.
And we still catch a lot of crap for being who we are from almost everyone, gay, straight or whatever. Not being interested in having sex is almost worse to some people, at least they can kind wrap their heads around different physical attractions. We get accused of being abused as children, selfish, sick, otherwise damaged or afraid of our sexuality.
This proposal is crap. I prefer one where the only kind of sexuality that's demonized is any kind where there's a victim rather than a partner.
It is sad that living a hetro lifestyle is more important to them than being alive. Problem?
You cannot be attacked over something others don't know about you.
Right, because no one's ever been bullied just because their tormentor thought he or she was [insert "undesirable" trait here] without any proof. (Not that having that proof would make it remotely right, of course)
Essi: "Because being different is worst thing that could possibly happen. Everyone should be exactly the same."
That about sums up these reactionary types. Everyone's free to do what they want, as long as that is exactly what the reactionaries want. If you have any real diverging opinions or desires, you should either keep them to yourself and blend in, leave, or die.
Wow, Fuchsia is full of it from begining to end. What a load of bullshit!
If I was different in some way, I'd do whatever it takes to keep that to myself so there won't be consequences from others.
I tried that, but it was ultimately impossible to hide an IQ of 145. ;-)
You cannot be attacked over something others don't know about you. If I was different in some way, I'd do whatever it takes to keep that to myself so there won't be consequences from others. Good idea. Let's start by applying it to religion- can't have a holy war if nobody knows which side everyone else is on, right?
I was, at one time, a black gay teenager. (I'm an adult now) I went to school with other, gay, bi,questioning, and trans black teenagers. It was because of people like you that we had to stick together, against our peers, teachers, and even our families, so that none of us would succumb to that inner darkness. None of us did. We are all alive, although some more worse-for-wear than others. For you to say such- Ugh! I personally want to slam this person through a wall! My grandma was/is accepting of me, but I'm one of the lucky ones. Hate. that's what I feel right now. Hate. No, just apathy. I will not let this upset me... /rant
What's really being demanded here is that gays get back in the closet, and we all go back to the 50s, sexual repression, stifling conformity and hypocrisy. They know that we won't eradicate homosexuality or teen sex, they just want us to do it secretly and be fucking hypocrites about it.
How about no. I refuse to hide what I am -- entirely because people will see me, and then I can show the bigoted fuckers that a girl can be queer and not butch or femme, that some firebrands will burn their way to making people understand that I'm not letting /anyone/ be discriminated against or treated like horseshit for /any/ reason, excepting superbly violent criminals.
It is sad that living a gay lifestyle is more important to them than being alive.
This is the point where you lose the plot. They don't choose to be gay. People generally don't choose who they are sexually atracted to.
The rest of you rant is all based on the false premise that sexuality is something you choose, and it really isn't.
For example, when did you choose to be straight? Could you choose to be gay?
Live in shame and fear!
You know it makes sense!
Here's a better idea. Everyone could accept that sexuality is obviously not a choice and if they still had a problem with gay people they could keep it to themselves. Anyone who mistreats another based on their sexuality chooses to do so, they are in control of their own behavior. Also, you clearly have no idea how evolution actually works, so keep your ignorance to yourself.
Okay, where's Gene Ray when we really need him?
Never mind, I think I can paraphrase well enough for this situation:
(stands up and shouts) YOU ARE EDUCATED STUPID AND EVIL!!!
There.
Ace-five, Stonespiral. This person obviously doesn't know the difference between asexuality and celibacy.
Then again, they don't understand the difference between decent human behavior and utter batshit stupidity...
"If you're not exactly like everyone else, stay out of sight and shut up" seems to be his message.
How despicable.
Edit: read the original. Seems he replied to CommonSense (one of our own, apparently) with a bunch of lies, BS, and nonsensical justification for being a bigot. Typical.
That is not how civilization should work.
The deal is that we don't break the rules and the system will come down on anybody who does, which keeps us safe from the people who could hurt us if there weren't rules, but also means we have to obey the rules or avoid having it noticed that we don't. Of course, it's still civilization if the rules are unfair and not applied equitably across society, but it's a less civil one.
Ideally, the rules are fair and the good people are also those who receive the protection they need. You are proposing that the rules are good by virtue of being rules. I think that is barbaric and moronic.
Your civilization is bad, and you should feel bad.
Good for you that you don't live in Sweden. Over here, being religious is to be different in some way. Even more different in some circles than being gay would be. But, luckily, you don't have to choose religious behavior, nor act on religious impulses. Let's promote a-theism as a viable and healthy alternative, and teach children to keep their religion to themselves until they are 18.
Doesn't seem as sound an option any longer, does it, Fuchsia?
Ah, of course: it's not the bullyboy tactics and persistent barrage of dogmatic abuse from bigots that cause these suicidal thoughts, it's having the temerity to be gay in the first place without hiding it! Just quash down this fundamental part of your identity, or you deserve whatever's coming to you!
Oh, and as for "it is sad that living a gay lifestyle is more important to them than being alive"... Fuck. You. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive, you bigoted sack of shit.
"It is sad that living a gay lifestyle is more important to them than being alive."
It is sad that you think people commit suicide for petty reasons. People commit suicide because they feel that their lives have become bleak, hopeless, and devoid of love.
"If I were to advertise my difference and wear it on my sleeve, I'd be asking for whatever mistreatment I get."
This argument says that bullying people for ANY reason--race, taste in clothing, being smarter than you, having a disability--is totally OK, because being different in any way is bad. I shouldn't have to explain why this is a disgusting argument.
@Raised by Horses: You talking about me? If so, yes I'm also female and non-Christian. At one time, I was a fundie though. (This is during my gay-denial stage, of course)
The first sentence filled me with hope.
Then the ones that followed took that hope, strapped it to a rack, spat on it, shot it with a full clip from an SMG, roundhouse-kicked it, cut it open, put a stick of dynamite in said opening and detonated it. Then cut up the remains into even tinier pieces with a butter knife. And smeared said pieces with said butter knife all over the SMG.
This did not make me happy :(
It is sad that living a gay lifestyle is more important to them than being alive .
Do you even read what you are writing? You are despicable.
@Crimson Lizard
So if I beat the shit out of Fuchsia for this post, it's her fault, not mine?
Good to know.
Well, of course. She said it herself: ” If I were to advertise my difference and wear it on my sleeve, I'd be asking for whatever mistreatment I get.”
They no more chose to be gay than they chose to be black. On the other hand, you might (if perhaps only subconsciously) choose to be a bigoted imbecile. Well, the bigoted part, anyway.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
