[Ah strict interpretive fundamentalism. It ruins all. ]
It doesn't ruin anything. Fundamentalism means just that - the fundamentals of the religion. It's the religion, but without the human arrogance. It's the religion as it is, not as individual people want it to be. Fundamentalist Islam is the real Islam, and all moderation in Islam - or any religion, for that matter - comes at the expense of the theology of the religion itself. Moderation always means you ignore the fundamentals of the religion, which is why I do not understand how anyone who adheres to any religion can be 'moderate' and still claim to adhere to the original religion whose rules they violate. I know Christians who watch pornography, and that's just as strange as Muslim men who take Jews or Christians for friends or refuse to spend money or risk their lives fighting for Allah.

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry at that one.
Fundamentalism is never the fundamentals of a religion. Fundamentalism always relies on highly selective interpretation of sacred texts based on particular hermeneutical traditions. Moderation in Islam goes back to the Prophet, just as in Judaism it goes back to the Oral Torah and in Christianity it goes back to the Gospels. Fundamentalism relies on mass literacy and the social freedom to break away from the mainstream. Fundamentalism is, essentially, modern.
I for one agree 100% with the post.
Moderate religious people are people who are too smart to take their religion seriously. That obviously isn't the religion's merit.
The heinous parts of the bible and the quran should be followed as well if one is to hold any of those books as inerrant.
Religious moderation, while sensible, is hypocritical.
Fundamentalism has more cherry picking of Scripture and ignoring other Scripture than moderate or mainline (older) sects have. Fundamentalism has been proved in studies to not only know less of what's in the Bible and what isn't than moderates but also less than Atheists know.
The largest areas of fundamentalism have: higher porn searchs, higher porn sales, higher teenage pregnancy, highest crime rates, highest murders, highest "accidental" gun deaths, highest illiteracy, highest racist percentages, highest arrests/incarcerations, highest child deaths, highest poverty, highest dumbfuck Republican Representatives, highest welfare, highest government fraud.
There is just very little better,, Cajun food, chili maybe?

Really?
strange as Muslim men who take Jews or Christians for friends
I don't know, that sounds like a LOT of ruined potential friendships. If I had such a strict limit of who could be my friend when I was a Christian I'd have missed out on some of my best friendships and some of the most memorable times of my life.
or risk their lives fighting for Allah.
That sounds a lot like a ruined life. Allah is God. Can't he take care of his own business? Why does he need us fallible and weak humans to do his work for him and fight battles he could win alone? Is your god incompetent or just lazy?

Allah is playing Dungeons and Dragons using us mere mortals as characters. He is entertained by the orcs and elves killing each other.
Interesting that you feel this way, since, in Christianity, the Bible didn't even exist until the fourth century, and Mosaic law was abolished with the events of the Gospels. Real, fundamentalist Christianity would be adherents giving up everything they own to minister to others, forgiving, and declining to judge others. Jesus said nothing about porn, which like the Bible, didn't exist then. So, your rant about porn appears to be human arrogance that has no place in fundamentalism.
Which is why, in a perfect setting, fundamentalism wouldn't exist.
I have no problem with people having different beliefs about they way in which the world works, but those disagreements should never lead to ostracization or violence. In the end, we need to treat each other humanely in order to maintain an optimal quality of life.
> It's the religion, but without the human
Weirdly enough, I agree. Fundamentalism is inhuman.
It's the religion as it is, not as individual people want it to be.
It's as people want it to be - they just cherry-pick the parts they're going to listen to. The Shiites, Sufi and Sunnites, the Protestants, Roman Catholics and Orthodox, the Hasidim and the Reformed - people kill each other over their individual interpretations.
In essence, yes. If you followed the Bible or Koran on everything, you would basically be a fundamentalist. But in practice, real fundies, whether they be ISIS or Westboro or Tea Partiers or Al Qaeda, cherry-pick what they want from their holy book no more than does a moderate Muslim or mainline Christian.
Confused?
