This is going to get tremendously ugly before it's over. I really think Turkish women could do without the headscarf myself, and as western countries go, Turkey is pretty backwards when it comes to male-female relations, so since women may not always be allowed to make the choice for themselves, banning headscarves might be the right -- or at least the Atatürkish -- thing to do. But it ain't gonna sway the masses.
I'm all for tolerance of different cultures, but I can't make excuses for the way many Middle Eastern, Arabic and Persian countries treat their women. I can't imagine spending my life under that kind of suppression. As frustrating as the western world can be, I'm grateful to have been born in a country that at least strives for equal rights, even if there are still some kinks that need to be ironed out. The view of women as objects and lesser beings is sickening.

To be fair it's not as if they see women as just any object. You ladies fall squarely into the prestigious category of "Things we can f***" which, as any Middle Eastern man can tell you, is the chief quality most 12th century chauvanists are looking for in their objects.

Thanks to Atatürk turkey is very secular for a muslim country, with the headscarf not being allowed in certain places (like, if I remember correctly, universities and administration buildings.
No wonder that the islamists try to demonize the western lifestyle of women living in the moetroplexes of turkey. I assume they dream of the whole of turkey turned into a duplicate of Anatolia, with the women being totally submissive to their male masters (which, depending on their age being either their father [and brothers] or their husband)
Sweet spaghetti. I cannot imagine living under such oppressive bullshit. Find women's chins offensive, fucker? That's your damn problem, not the woman's problem for owning a face. Those who cannot master themselves do not deserve mastery of anyone else. I'm so glad this has mostly died out in the West, give or take a few fundie communities.
I'm pretty sure this is another case of fundies not reading their own book, for the Islamic authors should have known that the devil's name in the Koran is not Satan, but Iblis. (Thank you, Sonic, for getting me to find that out!)
I miss Atatürk so badly. Who else in history singlehandedly smashed Islamic fundamentalism and ushered a secular life?
Not to mention a great deal of other Islamic states didn't hate him even afterwards.(egypt in particular)
