[So was slavery acceptable in biblical times and then become immoral in modern times? Whatever is going on, it doesn't sound like an immutable unchanging morality.]
You're an idiot.
Slavery, in and of itself, is not immoral. Kidnapping is. The slavery in the Bible was voluntary. Except in the cases of indentured servitude that were results of the servant stealing [they became servants in order to pay restitution].
The slavery we had in the States was immoral because people were being kidnapped from their homes and forced into it. They did not go into it voluntarily.
And the way many of them were treated was also immoral. The Bible gave guidelines of how to treat slaves and servants properly.

Wow... I would say poe except for the fact this is almost "moronic".
1. Slavery is immoral. Period. There is no such thing as good slavery. Its like "good genocide" or "good rape".
2. So they volunteered to be slaves? What sort of moron does that?
3. Indebtured servitude does not mean what you think it means. The Irish will kick your head in for saying that.
4. The biblical way of treating slaves is goddamn inhuman.
LOLz.
As if there were such a thing as voluntary slavery, except maybe BDSM style.
And... uh... wtf?!?! rules as to how to threat them "properly?" You already feel they are your property...
Wait, so...voluntary slaves? You conquer a country and take people out of it to do your work for you, as volunteers? Taking people is bad, but whipping them, caging them, and forcing them work for stale bread is perfectly fine?
Indentured servitude is not slavery. Close, but based upon trickery and desperate parents rather than, you know, the evil "kidnapping". Not only that, but indentured servitude is where apprenticeship meets virtual slavery, and hardly is comparable to slavery in of itself.
"The slavery in the Bible was voluntary...."
Tell that to the Jews, dipshit!
The immorality of slavery is the base reason why it's banned in the developed countries.
Voluntary! Ha, what a joke.
'No, no, you've got it all wrong! I didn't murder this guy, he just voluntarily impaled himself on my knife!'

Really? Let me tell you what the Bible says about how to treat your slaves.
And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his property. Ex.21:20-21
Basically, you can beat them savagely. As long as they survive a day or two afterward. Sounds pretty damn moral to me!
And LOL at "voluntary slavery".

"Hey, Esther, wanna come be my slave and get treated just the same as the cows out back?"
"Sure!"
...yeah, the thing about slavery is that it's SLAVERY. By definition, it's involuntary.
Slavery, in and of itself, is not immoral.
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your vessels. We will add your technological and biological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
This is the type of double-standard hypocrisy that really chaps my hide.
Slavery is slavery, you bullshitting weasel. The slave has no choice.
Fry: "You know the worst thing about being a slave? They make you work, but they don't pay you or let you go."
Leela: "That's the only thing about being a slave."
Fry: "You know what else sucks about being a slave? The hours."
No functional human would willingly become a slave.
So when a child is born a slave, that's voluntary?
Leviticus 22:11, Exodus 23:12, Exodus 21:4
How enlightened of God.

Slavery is involuntary by definition.
So, how much would be a good price to ask for either of my strong sons? They would make good laborers, as they are strong and healthy, although somewhat unmotivated.
(shakes head) You are such as asshole. Can I stone you for wearing a cotton/poly blend shirt? For making an unpleasant smell?
Slavery is wrong, end of story.
"The slavery in the Bible was voluntary."
If I ever go into the slavery business, I would DEFINIATELY not hire you as a slaver. You would be shit.
What are you gonna do, offer them a nice shrub in return for a lifetime of toil?
Fuck off.

I love how fundies justify inhumane behavior.

After all they have to. As they uphold the god of the bible as moral beacon and believe in the literal truth of the bible, everything god does, orders, sanctions must by default be good and moral.
Either this or an explanation has to be found (with use of lots of twisted logic) why the thing god did is normally not a good and moral thing, but, when god did it, was good and moral
:D
"The slavery in the Bible was voluntary."
And, what, they just forgot their safety word?
~David D.G.
So... The Israelites weren't fleeing slavery in Egypt, they were, what, engaging in a wildcat strike? And the whole Dead Sea business was actually poetic license used to describe the riot that broke out when Pharoah tried to get scabs to cross the picket line..?
So,,, when Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, it was voluntary? Learn your own damned book, please!
This is always an interesting read from the US Constitution:
Amendment 13 - Slavery Abolished. Ratified 12/6/1865. History
1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Using the word "except" shows that the Amendment to the US Constitution did not abolish slavery...but ony certain types.
>slavery
>voluntary
DOES NOT COMPUTE
Confused?
