The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey says that the UK should give priority to immigrants who are commited to "our values".

He says this is likely to mean they come from historically Christian countries. He says if immigration goes on at the level it is we are going to be "in trouble".

A cross-party group of MPs called the Balanced Migration Group wants cuts in immigration. Lord Carey says the current rate of arrivals is angering many British people and he supports a bias in favour of Christian immigrants. What do you think?

sorry mate but i need to call you to task on your dengration of britan, its peoples and its values;

drinking to excess, whilst there is a problem most of it is over exagerated by press like the daily fail, and other assorted infotainment press.

Fiddling taxes; that only really happens within the self employed or higher earners. i know this to be true as my wife has just confirmed it, and she works for HMRC (her majestys revenue and customs)

winging; yes we have had a moan or 2 but we are generally one of the happiest nations in Europe ( although if there has been any current winging its due to the ineptitude of the current government)

Violence; does your country not have violent individuals? our violence is nothing in comparison to some countries such as south africa or some of the more underprivaliged parts of the United States

avoiding work; that is a good one there. we are by far the longest working of all of the european states with many people working in excess of 50 hrs a week, i myself worked 65 hours last week, so dont tell me that we are lazy. yes we have the workshy but every nation does, and im sure you'd agree wherever your from you know this would be true.

if you are british yourself, then you need to consider moving to another country. Our Island has been responsible for some of the greatest acheivements in history, and if you are ignorant of that then you are a disgrace to the nation, and either need to learn some respect and knowledge of our history.

if however you are not british, then shame on you, you racist shit. I would NEVER make such sweeping statements, and nor would anyone else who has a bit of decency about yours or anyone elses country and values. you need to understand quick fucking smart that there is good and bad in ALL nations so to single out britain as being the bastion of all that is wrong with the world then you are well out of order.

@ Nate the wazzok! Seriously dude, die in a fire made of copies of the Daily Fail, as that seems to be where you're getting your idea of Britain from! (True, we ain't perfect, but show me one nation that is...)

As for the quote it's a tricky one, to be committed to the values of an 'historically Christian' nation such as the UK (we still have a state religion, just few actually believe it) then it is likely that you will come from an 'historically Christian' background i.e. those of a similar culture that has shared a similar developmental path are the most likely to share a similar set of norms and values. Nowhere in the quote does it say that there should be a test of religion for immigrants, or that more of them should be practising Christians, therefore I would argue that this isn't fundie, the fact that the old windbag is seen as an authority on immigration issues because he was the administrative head of the church on the other hand...

I don't think we should favor any people over another, but as far as the USA goes, I think we should close our borders or at least be much more selective. Call me what you like, but for three years I lived in a "nice" neighborhood which slowly turned into one of the highest Muslim concentrations and I doubt it was a coincidence that the neighborhood was named the fastest growing crime area in all the state. (Even above the worst of our downtown.) Try being a single woman suddenly surrounded by Muslim Fundie men. I routinely was called out by a 7 year old boy whenever I left the building and, I hate to say it, became very scared of some of the older ones.

I moved out this fall - I found out I had been doing the wrong thing, when some of the men saw me carrying down my quarterstaff they actually stood aside. It is fucked up.

Christians have the Lords Resistance Army who have been responsible for rape, murder, child slavery and death on a massive scale in the DRC. An event which resulted in the death of a personal friend of mine owing to a food riot caused by the LRA destroying food supplies.

Christians have also had the balkans where orthodoxy and catholics killed nearly a million people for stupid reasons just last decade.

British values? Like what? The UK's national food is the Curry and the people with the highest standards of living are Hindus. Its utter nonsense to think that "being christian somehow gives you a leg up". If we talked about British Music majority of it currently is in the hands of "immigrant ethnicities". Muslims don't drink and don't go out clubbing so they are easy to pick on. The British values are changing, because gone are the days when "christian" was regarded as important.

Lord Carey is a dying breed of man who thinks being christian is synonymous with being good.

Those replies to me? Yeah, those are good old British values. How dare some dirty foreigner (because, as a Jew born and bred in North London, I know only too well I am a dirty foreigner) criticise their own beloved country? The British like to tell themselves cosy little myths about themselves, about what a wonderfully tolerant people they are, and kind to animals, and all the rest of it, but if ever Britain was like that (I doubt it), it certainly isn't now. You don't think so? Go out on a Saturday night, in any town in Britain; go out on a Saturday afternoon, and join the football crowds. Go on the top deck of a bus at schooltime. That's your country, that is.

So, why, I am asked, if the British are so xenophobic, are the BNP not in power, and how come Mosley got nowhere? Because I forgot to mention the other great British virtue (and in a political context, it is a virtue). Apathy. It is impossible to imagine tea-bagging in Britain ... the idle buggers can't be arsed, which is probably just as well.

There is a valid point behind this race/religious predudice. If a country becomes one third one religion (or different culture, standards, beliefs), one third another and one third yet another there WILL be culture conflicts and unrest.

It's true that a country needs to keep a certain majority of one system or those who aren't opposed to that system. If he removed Christian and just stated European, North American or naturalized members of those countries I would agree.

A somewhat related Canadian event illustrates what can occur. The mounties accept Turbins to be worn by Islamic members but refuse First Nation members any concessions. Why are the First nation people refused their cultural rights? They are slighted and rightfully upset. The first nations have been part of the Mounties since their formation. Imagine if the system became one third all three groups
