I have been thinking a lot abot Heavy Rock/Metal music lately.
I went to the youth group my children attend and was shocked at what I heard, it sounded as though the Devil was present.
The music was very heavy with screaming. What is the Christian world coming to when it allows this type of music in the Church.
The Church should be a beautiful place with the Lord's presence.
Shouldn't people be attracted to Christianity because of Jesus and his Power? But the Church is attracting young people by using this dreadful music.
I like the odd rock song myself, but there must be a line drawn somewhere. I just cannot see how this heavy, agressive screaming music can be used to give praise and worship to our wonderfull Creator.
Music is an expression of the soul.
From a soul occupied by the wonderfull Spirit of God comes beautiful music.
All music should reflect the fruits of the Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self control Galations 5:22.
I don't believe Heavy Rock/Metal reflects these fruits. It demonstrates aggression, rebellion, depression, confusion etc and it distorts the soul of those who listen to it.
I would like to hear some comments on this.

Keep your head buried in the sand.
Keep believing in that mincing, prancing, unemployed, con man, gang leader, nut-job, jayzus.
In the 14th century there were only 5 notes to the octave, and anything deviating from that was called the music of the devil.
Now what key is your song of the day, 8 notes to the octave in a major key, 8 notes + 2 accidentals in a harmonic minor key?
I've got an idea... let's send this boy some Skinny Puppy. I'm sure he'll love it.
@ Furlong:
Actually, Marilyn Manson started a side-project many years ago, called "Satan on Fire", the purpose of which was just that (though the whole thing was supposed to be sarcastic and irony-filled, of course). His plan was to get booked in Christian clubs and such. It wasn't successful, as you can imagine.
"I don't believe Heavy Rock/Metal reflects these fruits. It demonstrates aggression, rebellion, depression, confusion etc and it distorts the soul of those who listen to it."
Not always. Gamma Ray and Rhapsody of Fire, to name two, write songs that are mostly about valiance and freedom. One of my favourite Gamma Ray songs has the lyrics "Do you remember the days when living was meant to be free/ Not looking for fame, not looking for fortune, the beauty of life was the key".
Of course, metal can be angry and aggressive, but it doesn't have to be.
Honestly, I don't think heavy metal or rock music really belong in a Christian church either. They just seem like they would be out of place.
But... the whole idea that rock music is evil/teh debil is fucking retarded.
Aggression? Flip to the last part of that book of yours. It reads like the cover of a Molly Hatchet album cover.
"It sounded like the Devil was present." you say?
According to Charlie Daniels he's more of a fiddle man. You might be mistaken.
Heavy Rock... snerk. I'm not going to take your opinion on board if you can't even get the name right.
@James: Even better, play them "Sonne". It glorifies religion... sorta.
Screaming with the loud music? tsk tsk tsk, kids today, huh? Why can't they just roll on the floor with rattlesnakes and talk in tongues like good god fearing folks ought. And as far as those satanic instruments; electrical geetars and such, I say 4 trombones and a tambourine should be plenty. Hmph.
I'd like to take this to say that a friend of mine listens to Cristian death metal. Examples are Demonhunter and Skillet, mostly Demonhunter.
Now, i prefer stuff that DOESN'T sound like a large, stuck pig, but w/e.
I seriously doubt they're playing heavy metal at your church. Probably some watered-down, poppy, alterna-christ crap is more like it. But, what's up with the assumption that rock has no beauty or joy in it? Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean other people don't find beauty in it. And just because a musician writes about something negative, doesn't mean they're advocating it. They're usually describing a life experience. Surely that's not too hard for you to grasp?
@ Jay-Sus
No, the biggest oxymoron ever is Christian black metal.
@ Don'tLookBehindYou
Those are metalcore bands. Metalcore are mostly whiny Christian bands who play louder than most Christian groups, like Avenged Sevenfold.
"It demonstrates aggression, rebellion, depression, confusion etc and it distorts the soul of those who listen to it."
Sorta like reading Rapture Ready.
What happened? Somebody play a tritone?
Well, in AJS's defense I name Varg Viker- oh, wait, "nigger music" ain't for him, so he switched genre, to electronic iirc... Then I cite Satyricon. There we go. Then there's Death. I'm in a Spiritual Healing shirt right now. Nuff said. God Hates Us All mostly speaks for itself - and that's a great pic, Mayhem :P
But seriously now - Metal tends to be anti-religion (organized ones, at least), and that's a fact no one can really dispute. But that's circumstantial. Metal developed as a form of rebellion, so naturally it rebels against common dogma, and in the western world where it developed that tends to be Christian dogma. That doesn't stop it from being potentially more Christian than any other type of music - you have to be knee-deep in a mindset (or a damn good actor) to preform with the zest of good Metal music. Ever heard Orphaned Land? Jewish, not Christian, but honest-to-god (literally) Jewish, and DAMN good Metal! Listen to their album Mabool when you have a chance. And then we have our rancid fundie Jewish Metal... I won't name them to avoid giving needless publicity :)
Funny, my father considers the 'old rock' of the debbil
His father considered C&W of the debbil
I'm not sure what my great grandfather considered of the debbil, but I'm pretty sure it's whatever my grandfather listened to.
Oh, and nobody tell AJS about Christian Rap
I'm pretty sure Rap, Hip Hop, (what is now refered to as) R&B (REAL R&B, Rhythm and Blues is freaking awesome!) is ALLOT worse than any heavy metal or hard rock.
Fucking moron. So long as the lyrics are meaningful, who cares how the music is arranged and the lyrics are sung.
100 years ago the waltz was considered the devil because it was faster - 3/4 time!! oh nos!!
Oh, and did you know that rock is just the love child of Gospel, Country and Blues? Yeah, GOSPEL BITCH!!
Play Marduk's song "Christraping Black Metal" to this guy and watch his head explode.
"Fistfucking God's Planet" would also do.
If all fundies had that point of view, we wouldn't have to put up with bullshit like Unblack Metal or Stryper...
Music is a matter of taste. To the people who like Heavy Metal, that kind of music IS beautiful.
I don't like it, but it doesn't concern me what other people listen to, as long as I don't have to listen to it.
(emphasis added)
"I don't believe Heavy Rock/Metal reflects these fruits. "
You have no idea how right you are. One word: Stryper:

'Christian Metal'. Oxymoron of the century. . QED
"I would like to hear some comments on this."
Okay. Iron Maiden. Their drummer Nicko McBrain is a Christian. One of their biggest hits is is "The Number of the Beast". Yet, they can come up with the morality tale encapsulated in "Hallowed Be Thy Name".
Not for nothing did they emerge from the NWOBHM as the band supreme, they're the hardest working group on the planet. Stryper? These days, reduced to ripping off other groups' material. Including Iron Maiden's.

Iron Maiden. No nonsense, unpretentious, bollocks-out Heavy Metal. Stryper. One of these things is not like the other. Which is it, AJS?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
