The Utah House has passed a bill banning any mention of contraception in sex education classes. If a school does offer sex ed, it has to be abstinence only.
The state House passed HB 363 in a 45-28 vote following extensive debate. The bill -- which now goes on to the state Senate -- would lift the current requirement that all public schools must teach sex ed in grades 8 through 12. If the bill passes, districts would decide whether to offer sex ed classes that teach an abstinence-only curriculum, or not offer the course at all. Republican state Rep. Bill Wright sponsored the proposal. "We've been culturally watered down to think we have to teach about sex, about having sex and how to get away with it, which is intellectually dishonest," Wright said, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. "Why don't we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"
Rep. Wright say his bill was prompted by Planned Parenthood materials which "promote promiscuity."

Never mind that abstinence-only education leads to shattered lives, teen pregnancy, poverty, misery, and abortion. No, we need to protect these children from the evils of dong-shaped latex balloons and little white pills!
Why don't we just be honest with ourselves upfront that teenagers are likely to have sex, ready or not, but sooner and more disastrously if not? See here, Mr. Wrong, how will you feel when your fourteen-year-old comes in and says she or he needs your permission to get married right away? That's what happened a lot in the good old ignorance is bliss days.
Dear Americans,
Please remember, before you get all upset with the inevitable mocking and 'stupid yank' gibes, that these are your elected representatives saying these things. If you don't want to be thought of as a nation of ignorant douchebags, stop electing ignorant douchebags to represent you.
@ rubber chicken
Uh, this moronic douche is a state level politician. Only people who are residents of the state get to vote in those elections. You can hardly blame all Americans for voting for him and the rest of the idiots that voted to pass the bill. Hopefully it will be defeated in the state senate, but given the fact that Utah has a bunch of Mormon fundies, I won't be surprised if it passes.
@anevilmeme: The 12th century actually was a relatively open one about sex--I mean, patriarchal and preoccupied with keeping possession of one's women, but crude and very low on shyness and marriage was only just getting into the hands of the priests, and that for the upper classes. It was still primarily a civil convention, just like it's mostly become again only with less paperwork. And Now You Know.
Have fun with that teenage pregnancy rate, Utah.
...You know, there's a reason we sent the Mormons there. Now I think I know why.
Once again, Republicans/Conservatives equate ignorance with innocence.
Kids, before everyone became citified and sissified, knew where babies came from almost before they knew how to walk.
And who said sex outside of marriage is devastating? Besides uptight "oh sex is dirty" fundies?
@rubber chicken:
Politician says something stupid => "Man, that's a stupid politician"
American politician says something stupid => "Man, Americas are so stupid"
"Why don't we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"
Because you'd be lying to them? Sex in and outside of marriage is great, but not telling sexually active kids about birth control has been proven many times over to lead to an increase in teen pregnancies.
People will fuck. Get over it and tell them how to do it safely.
"Why don't we just be honest with them upfront that sex outside marriage is devastating?"
No, unplanned unmarried pregnancy is devastating. Considering that we have a 50% divorce rate, it would appear that most children are born "outside marriage", if by that you mean living with both their biological parents.
Teens in the United States and Europe have similar levels of sexual activity. However, European teens are more likely than U.S. teens to use contraceptives generally and to use the most effective methods; they therefore have substantially lower pregnancy rates.
So basically you're going to teach kids all about sex, and then tell them not to have sex?
I'm guessing the teen pregnancy rate in Utah is going to spike in a few years.
how to get away with it, which is intellectually dishonest
Only in your warped, little mind, Rep. Wright.
...sex outside marriage is devastating?
It is?! No one told me!!!
You hypocritical douchnozzles. School is for education and with education comes with actual facts. Honestly, these people sicken me.
I just spent an evening blowing apart sexual myths that my 25 year old American born cousin still believed were true!
I apologize to sane rational Americans, but this is one of the reasons I, and so many of my friends', are currently laughing at you. Again, I apologize.
No. No, no, no. What, exactly, are conservatives trying to do? What, exactly, is their ultimate goal? Because I have NOT been able to figure out what they're trying to achieve with all this anti-human bullsh*t. Sex ed has been PROVEN to dramatically reduce STDs and unwanted pregnancies! But then, science is this nasty, cold conspiracy thing that experiments on humans and lets people learn about...things!
Liberals, in general, want world peace, equality, and an ideal universal standard of living. Republicans want to...return to the 1950s, or something? Build a theocracy no better than some Muslim countries?
Seriously, what the HELL is their ultimate goal?
I hope you have budgeted for a huge rise in abortions in the comming years, you stupid dolt!
Abstinence-only sex-ed doesn't work, it has been scientifically shown not to work.
When you teach teenagers about sex, what happens and how to avoid becoming pregnant, it makes it easier for many to wait a bit longer. And those who can't wait know how to not become pregnant or catch STDs.
In what way is sex outside marriage devastating?
If you are married and have sex with someone else, sure, but if you're not married and have sex with another person who is not married either, you're harming no-one.
Me and hubby were together for ten years before we married, and we've been married for fifteen years. The sex outside and the sex within marriage are indistinguishable.
Planned Parenthood does not promote promiscuity; they observe reality and takes action based on their observations.
Teenagers are going to have sex, no matter what you teach them. At least teach them how to handle it responsibly.
Sweden has a fairly extensive sex-ed, which begins early on in school. We have VERY few teenage mothers and fathers (yes, the fathers exist too, not just girls get pregnant as teenagers); parents younger than 18 are front page news. Most wait until they are 25 or so, until they have kids.
Okay, teach that sex outside of marriage is devastating. Its demonstrably inaccurate, potentially dangerous, but its still a concession I'd be willing to make if you followed such a lesson with "But if you decide to do it anyway, because some of you just will, please at least try to do it safely" and bring out the condoms.
But they won't, because, as has previously been noted, they're a bunch of raving mad douchenozzles.
@ Rationalist
You're welcome here. Perhaps visit first; we have lots of douchebags over here too, and our current government is trying to introduce everything that is wrong with the US into our society. We even have our very own outspoken fundamentalist Christans in government now, I'm sad to say. Not many yet, but they too want to return us to the 1950s.
@ Swede:
The difference is that your crazies always get shouted down by the general public before they can do much damage. Our crazies always get encouraged. Furthermore, the reason that right-wing politics are becoming more widespread in Western Europe is entirely due to the global economic crisis. And do you know which country caused the economic crisis? It is, of course, the United States. So even if your right-wingers were to succeed in anything, and they won't, it would still be our fault.
You know how I've mentioned a sincere desire to move to Canada, even though their current Prime Minister is conservative? I'd rather have a million Stephen Harpers than a single George W. Bush. Speaking of Canada, back in the sixties Quebec, which up to then had pretty much been a Catholic theocracy, completely and totally embraced secularism in the "Quiet Revolution". Today, Quebec is one of the least-religious provinces in Canada. For some reason, the US has never had its own Quiet Revolution, and I doubt it will, thus proving once and for all the ultimate inferiority of Americans when compared with the rest of the Western World. I greatly resent my ancestors for immigrating to here instead of someplace else such as Canada. Even my most optimistic estimate of when American society will catch up with the rest of you won't be for several decades, by which point it's too late. If any of you remember what Tempus said earlier, he speaks the truth. There is absolutely no hope for us Americans.
FUCK YOU, SOCIETY! IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK TO BE LIKE RATIONAL PEOPLE?
Stop lying and saying the only way not to get pregnant is to not have sex. There are other ways, and if you don't teach them, well, teenagers have a tendency to have sex at that age, and people like you that would result in any teen pregnancies caused by sex miseducation.
"We've been culturally watered down to think we have to teach about guns, about gun safety and how not to get accidental discharges, which is intellectually dishonest. Why don't we just be honest with them upfront that shooting guns is devastating?"

@Brendan Rizzo
You gave me an interesting line of thought. In America, at least, liberal politicians seem afraid to actually state their convictions plainly as "There's nothing wrong with having an abortion" or "Religious doctrines have no place in government". And just try running for office as an admitted atheist.
As if we needed MORE idiots in government.
And yes, I'm American. You may commence with the "stupid yank" gibes now.
Seems to me that decades of puritan politics where anyone with the merest hint of an interesting sex-life was deemed so scandalous as to be unsuitable to hold office has left you being governed by a collection of emotional cripples so deranged by their own inablilaty to get laid that they can't abide the thought of anyone else getting laid.
Humans, like every other mammal are hard wired to want to have sex once they reach sexual maturity. They just are. Denying it won't make it not true. Teens will still want to have sex they just won't know how to have safe sex.
That or your darling little daughter who you are trying so hard to protect from the big bad world will get her sex-ed from porn sites instead of educators (and you can go back to changing her daipers)

Yeah. Because it's not as if the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints promote a China-esque 'One Child Only ' policy themselves , amirite?!
Moral: The phrase 'The womb is not a clown car' exists for a reason .
If sex was only for procreation, we would be designed to ovulate only after sex, like many other mammals are. However, as the human child is so vulnerable at birth and needs so long with its parents, we're designed to want to stick together for a long, long time, ergo; designed to want to have sex for pleasure. And to bleed and have cramps each month, what a PERFECT design!
Confused?
