If Phil [Robertson] ever actually harms a black person, get back to me. THAT would be racism, maybe. Until then, if you can't defend the man's right to free speech, you're pretty worthless as an American.

Racism is an idea, not the occurence of violence... Redefition Award?
"Until then, if you can't defend the man's right to free speech, you're pretty worthless as an American."
Puhh, just got out of that mess.*
*Sorry Americans, I couldn't resist.
Yes, he indeed has freedom of speech.
So did the company that employed him, as well as every single American that spoke up against his comments, and every one that spoke up in his defense.
Not a single one of them was arrested or silenced by the government, which is what your right to free speech protects you from. The right does not protect you from being criticized when you say something stupid.
Here we go again: so only white douches have freedom of speech, and anyone who disagrees is some sort of Nazi?
Sure, you massive pile of dog shit.
Losing everything over being a bigot is a bit extreme. It's when you push that bigotry on others that we should take umbrage. They could have turned this to an advantage. A cultural victory and a ratings booster. A touching special where a self-made man set in his ways could't see something is wrong because that's just how it always was: Segregation, job and educational discrimination based on presumption, pay discrepancy, those who suffer in silence because they don't believe change will ever come. And was made to see the other side of things, where men could not make a life for themselves not for lack of effort but for the scorn of other men. To be made to ask himself what exactly has he lost when he claims 'entitlements' are stealing from him? To wonder how he could have worked beside those men on the fields and then dismiss them entirely when he managed to climb out of poverty, never wondering why they couldn't do the same?
Instead... This bullshit.
Then I should be able to call you an idiotic pasty honky cracker. But that is not, you know, NICE, and out of human decency I will refrain from calling even you that.
Hmph, people's rights are prioritized over decency and life.
Why should I care about my worth as a citizen of a disgusting empire?

Sure. I have also been known to fall for trolls, Poes, bullshit artists and the like. But a lot of times it's a case of either occasionally being taken in or kicking those those who deserve it in the slates.
I defend his right to free speech. You are confused about what the first amendment and free speech is. The first amendment does not shield you from the reactions of your employer to anything that you might say. Nor does it protect you from the reaction of the public. Neither does the concept of free speech. If it did then it would not be free speech. As ignorant as Robertson's comments were, if the government had arrested him or attempted to silence him, I would stand right next to him to protect his first amendment rights. However, what happened to Robertson did not violate his rights.
One more thing. If you think that violence is necessary for something to be classified as racism than you are beyond help.
Confused?
