[a mother whose attempt to ban Harry Potter from the library shelves of public schools failed]
At Tuesday’s hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.
“I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again,” Mallory said. “I think we need him.”
Mallory said she has testimony from children who have read the Harry Potter books and have thought about acting out spells described in the books.
“They don’t want the Easter Bunny’s power,” Mallory said. “The children in our generation want Harry’s power, and they’re getting it.”

Who is getting "Harry's power?" Prove that some child has become an effective spell caster by reading about Harry Potter. Prove it, or shut up.
Pensacola. I should have guessed. She's from the land of "eye babies."
Most of the "spells" in Harry Potter involve waving a wand around (snore) and speaking Latin (*yawn*). Seriously why don't we ban Bibles because reading them in school violates sepreation of church and state? Oh wait it dosn't. Teaching them to your kids in school does however, and no English teacher and school would make Harry Potter requried reading.

“I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again,”
I'm still shaking my head at that part.

Jesus, no wonder the judge sided with the school board. It's a fictional novel, not the Grand Grimoire.
I hate to state the obvious, but Laura does know that the Easter Bunny isn't real? She does know that doesn't she?
Mind you, how do you prove that a human sized fluffy rabbit hasn't been hiding eggs everywhere in April?
They don’t want the Easter Bunny’s power
Funniest thing I've read all day.

Nonsense. You're allowed to read a Bible in school, so you're allowed to read Potter in school.
As a side note, Star Wars , too, is a religion to many people. Should those books be banned, too? Should the Bible be banned because the opening scenes contain nudity, which could remind people of Wicca?
“The children in our generation want Harry’s power, and they’re getting it.” Another moron thinking witchraft is real and that the Potter books are instruction manuals.
When reading fiction, it's supposed to be "willing SUSPENSION of disbelief", NOT "willing permanent abandonment of disbelief".
Though, I suppose that mistake is understandable, since it clearly is spilling over from the way you relate to that one big fairytale.
So, waving a wand and speaking pseudo-Latin is giving kids magic powers now?
I mean, my nephew's been trying it for months now, and he's still upset that he can't turn his bed into a giraffe.
(This woman obviously has no clue as to the difference between Wicca and the purely-fictional witchcraft.)
Anyway, anything that can get a 4th-grader to read a 300+-page book can't be a bad thing.
Now, I actually feel pity for this woman. She's making a fool of herself and is giving the Christianity she believes in a bad name. If those Christians, who have long ago abandonned HP controversy, were real ones, they would try to make her reason and stop. Her problem is that she has been misinformed by a stupid pastor or propaganda from her church and she's making a leap in the dark. She knows she's being ridiculised and humilliated in the media, but she thinks that, only this way, she will be heard. I think that the media should shut up. It's precisely what she, or rather the people behind her, are looking for, publicity. Sooner or later, she'll have to accept that she's wrong and why and this way, you're actually turning her into a martyr.
I want neither. Negi's power would be another thing though, or, while we're at it, Yagami Kazuma's power - it a.) is extremely powerful, b.) involves a contract with a spirit for maximum fundiepissofficy and, sadly, c.) is just as fictional as all the other powers.
Wait a second, does that mean that this fundie believed in the power of the easter bunny? 0_0
I, for one, have never felt the desire to be able to shout "Expelliarmus!" at other people.
Lightsabers, on the other hand; phasers; a sonic screwdriver; even a smack idiot over tcp/ip spell, I will admit to desiring.
When did fundies lose sight of the concept of fiction?
They never had it in the first place. They believe the Bible is true, don't they?
Who the hell would want wimpy Harry Potter magic when you could have Doctor Strange's magic? The guy can create supernovas, seal black holes, teleport anywhere in the multiverse, freeze and turn back time at will, destroy entire dimensions, steal the power of gods and use it against them, and a billion other things.
Kinda a hard sell lady, especially since, according to my 11 year-old Harry Pottter expert, the words "God" and "devil" are never mentioned in the books.
So the books should be banned because they violate separation of church and state, but in the same breath, she says "I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again". What the hell does the woman want?
Actually, she only wants separation of church and state if it's someone else's church.
So? I have testimony from children that faries are real. And any kid with an active imagination has tried waving a stick and saying some of the nonsense words in Harry Potter. But, you know, most sane kids will realize nothing happens and move on. Harry Potter does not espouse witchcraft as a religion, and if this woman knew the first thing about either Wicca or the books, she would realize that.
So what if kids act out the spells in HP? Kids act out all the time, playing roles from Star Wars, LotR, Narnia, Buffy, etc. etc. etc. It's called "playing," Laura. It's normal, it's healthy, and it's fun. 3 reasons a fundie would want to ban it, I guess.

“I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again,” Mallory said.
If Mallory can demonstrate one part of Harry Potter that references a God or Goddess, she might have an argument about the religious bit.
Of course, that would mean she'd actually have to actually READ the books, instead of just BANNING them.

So your religion is exempt from that whole 'separation of church and state' thing?
In the bible, King Saul engages the witch of Endor to conjure up the deceased shade of the prophet Samuel.
THE BIBLE ENCOURAGES WITCHCRAFT!!! BAN IT!!!
You heard it here first, Laura Mallory=Dolores Umbridge! Explains a lot, huh? :p
"I must not tell lies." Familiar with this?
P.S.-I've read about real, honest-to-gods witchcraft and it is NOTHING like Harry Potter! Mallory, your point is invalid...thanks for playing; now go home, take your meds and lie down!
Harry Potter is not a religion.
No practising Wiccan would be caught dead saying "wingardium leviosa" while waving a wand in a somewhat limp wristed manner.
"and they're getting it" ? wut ? citation really needed.
The Easter bunny is a servant of an old female God, Eoster.
“They don’t want the Easter Bunny’s power,”
And what power does the Easter Bunny have, exactly?
So the bible's murder, rape, incest, human sacrifice and genocide is just fine but Harry Potter books are corrupting our children?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
