Brain, Maggie and all the NOM staff - thank you for your tireless efforts here in New York. We are ready to move to the next stage of the fight. This was forced on the people of New York against our will (per the usual for this agenda) and we will not let it stand.

I suspect that when we look back on this we will see that this was the moment when the people of this state (and this country) got a giant wake-up call. It reminds me of something a certain Japanese Admiral said after the attack on Pearl Harbor:

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

The satirical magazine The Onion is known to sometimes make incredible accurate predictions (for example, they described the whole mess of the George W. Oh how right you are, sweetheart. Once an oppressed group gets a taste of equal rights, their fight for equality is only going to spread elsewhere until they get it, especially after a major morale-boosting victory like this one, so we're here, we're queer, and you had better get used to it.

Imagine the scene if you will, Bonnie & co:

A world where it's illegal to be straight. Where the population is maintained via external means (fertilisation outside the womb, test-tube babies, artificial wombs etc).

Where being gay is normal.

Those who don't openly profess to be at least Bi, is ghettoised, are looked down upon as being worse than the Ebola virus, sworn at, spat upon and punched & kicked in the street (as they have no rights whatsoever), and are persecuted in ways that only certain people can relate to.

Who are persecuted at will; their property/assets stolen, with no legal recourse whatsoever. Beaten up by 'hetero bashers', their houses burned, and the occupants shot or lynched.

Or even rounded up in concentration camps, where they're used as slave labour (where they're worked till they drop, then gassed & incinerated), or worse still: experimented upon.

That was what happened to African Americans & Jews in the past. Not very nice, eh? Now just imagine the exact same thing happening to you.

Hopefully you now realise why your homophobia can never be justified. Ever.

PROTIP: WWII =/= the Civil Rights Movement. 'Bad Analogy of the Month Award' at least, I'd say.

So what if the US is in decline? That doesn't necessarily mean bigotry will win. Many superpowers throughout history have become non-superpowers and yet social justice has increased. For example, when was the last time the Dutch were a superpower? And yet they're fairly liberal compared to the US at any point in its time as a superpower. The entire English empire fell apart until they were back to being just a couple of islands off the coast of Europe and they seemed to manage. I think the media being saturated with these bigots only hurts their cause and that (like the interracial marriage issue) they're only being loud and obnoxious because they know they're losing. You underestimate how much the general public in the US values freedom.

Forced on us against our will, huh? That must be why so many people (homosexual and straight) were cheering and partying after this law was passed. That must be why a majority of New Yorkers (myself included) support same-sex marriage. That must be why our state senate and state assembly, both of which are comprised of people legally elected by New Yorkers, followed every legal procedure by voting to pass this bill.

But if a state votes to deprive its own citizens of legal rights and protections and officially declares them third-class citizens in everything but name, THAT'S not forcing anything on people "against their will?" Oh, no, not when it's something that YOU want. Not when it's being horrible to people that you don't like. Shut up, you stupid, patronizing hypocrite. And that goes for all the members of your precious NOM as well.

Yes, this will be the moment when scores of people will justifiably say, "What the heck took you so long?" Or, if they're more cynical, they may say, "What was the big deal? The whole country should have taken care of that ages ago. Why on earth did it have to be state-approved rather than federally-approved?"

You're comparing the passage of a bill which would extend legal rights and protections to a greater amount of people to a horrible act of terrorism that killed hundreds of people?

Whoa there, let's not be so hasty. I don't think that you would have said that the US was falling ten years ago. I don't think that Bush, who is not even in office anymore, could ruin the country so much and so permanently in such a short time. You underestimate the effect of globalism. Yes, Americans have not experienced any catastrophes on par with the two world wars, but since the younger generation (of which I am a part) generally have more access to what people outside of the US think than their parents and grandparents did, I say, wait a few more decades before deciding that the United States is doomed. It took about 200 years for the Western Roman Empire to decline past the point of no return. It's only been 10 years since these fundies started becoming heard.

Quote mine all you want, Bonnie (and Pearl Harbour =/= Civil Rights), but the simple fact is this: Your time - as the dominant paradigm - is over. Your light is dying. As it was with attitudes before the Civil Rights movement, pre-Rosa Parks - and what happened afterwards. NAACP and ACLU ring any bells?
