An elementary school in -- where else -- Massachusetts, sent a letter to parents in August 2008 informing them that "Our night custodian has informed us of his decision to change his gender and, as we begin the school year, he will begin living and working as a woman."
Superintendent Ernest Boss and Principal Norman Yvon further stated that "if [students] ask at school, they will be given a simple and straightforward answer. The best thing to tell them is that our custodian used to be a man. She has changed her gender role and is now a woman."
So now this one man's psychologically and morally disordered desire to live publicly as a woman and the school administration's complicity in facilitating his disorder exposes an entire school full of children to ideas and images to which no elementary child should be exposed and forces parents to explain what no parent should have to explain to 5-10 year-olds.
No government employee should be permitted to tell other people's children that this man "used to be a man... and is now a woman." That statement is not factual and not true. It is false, controversial, unproven, values-laden, and faith-based. The belief that amputating healthy parts of one's sexual anatomy and taking hormones appropriate to the opposite sex changes one's sex constitutes a pernicious delusion or fiction. No government employee should be permitted to make such statements to children.

On the other hand, if we get children to realize that LGBT people exist and are really just like everyone else, they won't grow up to be bigoted assholes like you, Laurie.
When my friend's daughter was in elementary school in Montgomery County, Maryland, they had a transgendered (male-to-female) teacher undergoing reassigment surgery, and the administration handled it the same way. No big deal, really.
How exactly is this going to harm the children?
Your personal feelings of yeeeeewwwww, that's icky doesn't count.
Well, I admit I'm not sure every 5 year old is really ready to understand what is happening and it is up to the parents to determine when they've reached that level of maturity... I would think on some level it would be better to switch jobs or something, but I'm not sure that's really right either. I guess I'm on the fence here as it is just one person vs a whole school...
On the other hand, it is the night custodian, so how much interaction do they really have with the children?
True or false doesn't matter. It's not up to employers to discriminate based on gender, or any. . . variation. . . thereof. Besides that, it's not like they're announcing it to the kids, they're telling the parents what the kids will be told IF THEY ASK.
I can't say I understand well this sort of issue not having been through exactly that, but why is it not possible that even though someone's DNA made them one SEX anatomically that there wasn't something in their prenatal (or post for that matter, though I don't think it's a matter of environmental influence, considering) development that wired them to think/feel like the opposite SEX? Why is that so implausible other than you obviously haven't had any rudimentary embryology or experienced any sort of turmoil over your gender? And have you ever considered that gender is a social construct and how that might be relevant to the discussion?
Explaining things to children!!?? THE HORROR!
They should just not say ANYTHING and let the children be confused and ignorant! That's the point of school, right?
I don't believe in keeping anything from children.
If you're too lazy to explain things to your kids, don't have any. Please.
... forces parents to explain what no parent should have to explain to 5-10 year-olds
Aw ... poor parents. I guess it's all about avoiding making them uncomfortable talking about s-e-x.

Actually, all males start out as women and then change to men in the uterus. They have a vagina. It's hidden in the scrotum and is used as a conduit for the blood vessels and ligaments for the testicles.
So just because someone doesn't wanna be made fun of for changing his/her gender, they deserve to be teased?
You fucking cunt. Go drink cyanide.
From what I understand about transsexuals and Sex Reassignment Surgery, most people live and present as their preferred gender for a while before ever going under the knife. So the kids might not even notice the difference.
How about you concern yourself with Illinois and leave Massachusetts alone, huh? They're doing fine without your help.
..."faith-based"...
Hold the phone!! What!!
Oh, and your a moron.

... says someone whose religion teaches that your founder "used to be a man... and is now a piece of bread".
(fine, ok, that's Catholics, but they all look the same from where I'm standing ;-))
I guess it might be a bit tricky to explain to a five year old, but really, this isn't as big a deal as you're making out. Do you think the kids will be mentally scarred by it, or that it will turn them all transgender or ghey or something? I bet most of them won't even notice that the woman who is the night attendant is the same person as the man who was the night attendant last year.
I wonder what Laurie thinks about intersex people or others with unusual chromosomal/genital differences.
Strangely, kids are almost always more accepting of this kind of thing than adults.
I'm as much a secularist than anyone else, but these are elementary school kids. I taught biology to middle schoolers and when it came to things like alleles and Darwin you can't even say the word "sex" without parents flipping out. Although Mrs Higgins clearly needs to DIAF, I think the school could have handled that better, and should have handled that differently.
Oh, shut the fuck up, you ignorant bigoted shit. You know jack about transgenders. There's a huge process to it, it's not like the guy woke up when day and said "Gee, I think I'd like to be a woman now." She probably went through a shitload of emotional crap before deciding to do this, so how dare you make it any more difficult for her.
Do you really think the kids are going to notice, much less give a shit, if there's a female janitor instead of a male one? Dunno about you, but when I went to high school I cared dick about the janitors. Except for one of them, a guy who stood at the garbage can where we dumped out lunch trays, we spied him surreptitiously humping the doorknob behind him several times...I digress. The only reason it could end up being a big deal is if douchebags like you make it into one.
It is false, controversial, unproven,
He used to have an outie, now she has an innie. I think that's pretty good proof.
Anyway, just saying a statement to a child about the facts is a lot less traumatizing than the OMG HE'S GOIN TO HELL bullshit you people add to everything.
Confused?
